Joe Willock was carried off the field on a stretcher after sustaining an injury during Newcastle United’s friendly defeat in South Korea — though Eddie Howe played down the severity afterwards.
Newcastle lost 1-0 to a K-League All-Star team in Suwon on Wednesday, their third-successive friendly defeat of pre-season, and Willock went down after a challenge in the final minute, seemingly in agony clutching the back of his leg around the ankle area and gesturing towards the bench.

The 25-year-old remained on the turf, holding the back of his leg, before medical staff carried him off the field on a stretcher.
After the sale of Sean Longstaff to Leeds United this month, Newcastle’s midfield sources have already been depleted, with Willock one of five senior midfielders remaining, alongside Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Lewis Miley.
Willock has missed significant chunks of the past two seasons with thigh, Achilles tendon and hamstring problems and he ideally needs a full pre-season campaign to reach peak fitness. Despite initial fears about Willock, Howe said he was hopeful it was not a “major injury”.
“I don’t have a major update yet but it didn’t look great on the pitch,” Howe told a post-match press conference. “But, at this moment, it doesn’t look like a major, major injury. And fingers crossed it’s not, because Joe has suffered enough. Hopefully he’s OK.”

‘They feel they let me down’ – Norris reveals McLaren apology after failure
Lando Norris says McLaren bosses Zak Brown and Andrea Stella apologised to him after an oil leak caused him to retire from the Dutch Grand Prix.Norris is 34 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, having been on course to finish second at Zandvoort until a car part failed on the chassis side which led to an oil leak and the engine to shut down. The British driver found it "surprisingly easy" to "move on" from McLaren's first mechanical retirement since 2023's season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix."It's not Andrea's fault, it's not Zak's fault. I think it was 60-something races without a technical failure, without any issues. I think that's a record for ourselves. It's something we're pretty proud about," said Norris ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix."For that to happen now, that's just being unlucky. It wasn't a bad job […]

‘Hard-done-by’ Bateson gets his chance against Conlan
Jack Bateson would be forgiven for comparing Michael Conlan's career bitterly with his own.Conlan was an outstanding amateur, a two-time Olympian and a World Championship gold medallist.
