Eight-time Mr. Olympia winner Ronnie Coleman was recently hospitalized after experiencing a critical medical emergency caused by sepsis. The 61-year-old bodybuilding icon’s condition prompted widespread concern within the fitness and health community.
Coleman had been attending a public appearance in Wisconsin when his health suddenly deteriorated.

According to footage shared on his official YouTube channel, he began showing signs of medical distress, including slurred speech and altered behavior.
He was admitted to hospital shortly thereafter and diagnosed with sepsis – a life-threatening condition resulting from the body’s response to infection.
Once hospitalized, Coleman‘s condition rapidly worsened. Medical professionals confirmed he had entered septic shock, with organ function declining and a body temperature rising to 104°F.
He was placed in a medically induced coma, connected to a ventilator, and administered intravenous antibiotics. An abscess in his leg was identified as the source of infection.
Further complications revealed damage to one of Coleman‘s heart valves. In response, doctors performed two critical medical procedures: surgical drainage of the abscess and a transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Following these interventions, Coleman was gradually stabilized, removed from intensive care, and discharged to continue recovery at his home in Dallas.
Recovery and advocacy
During recovery, Coleman shared a public message detailing the severity of his condition. He acknowledged that the episode nearly resulted in fatal consequences and credited his 13-year-old daughter with contacting emergency services in time.
Medical reports later confirmed that Coleman‘s cardiac function had dropped to approximately 20% during the peak of the health crisis.
In a social media post following his release from hospital, Coleman stated: “This was a tough one… and this sepsis infection almost took your boy out. It was by the grace of God that I’m still here.”
His message emphasized the importance of early recognition and treatment of sepsis.
In response to his experience, Coleman launched a public health initiative titled Ronnie Strong in collaboration with the Sepsis Alliance. The campaign is focused on raising awareness about the dangers of sepsis and promoting early intervention.
Coleman has committed to using his platform to educate the public, stating that if his story can help save even one life, the effort will have been worthwhile.
Coleman‘s family had released an earlier statement through his social media, requesting privacy while confirming his hospitalization: “He is currently receiving expert medical care and continues to show incredible strength and resilience.”
This incident is not the first major health challenge Coleman has faced. He has undergone numerous surgeries over the past decade related to spinal and joint injuries accumulated during his professional bodybuilding career.
Despite chronic pain and mobility limitations, Coleman remains active in the fitness community and continues to engage with fans.
