There is no doubt that what’s happening with the Cleveland Browns is a real show – fitting for a team that has had only four winning seasons since 1999. Without question, the Browns have been the most dysfunctional franchise in the NFL during that time, and now they have four quarterbacks competing for the starting job.
Shedeur Sanders shows how bad he wants to start for the Browns with extra work in training camp
In the 2023 season, the Browns made the playoffs, but it feels like that was ages ago. Defensively, led by Myles Garrett, they may have one of the best units in the league. Offensively, however, it’s a complete mess – and not just at quarterback. The running game is uncertain, and in the passing game, beyond tight end David Njoku and receiver Jerry Jeudy, there isn’t much to look at.
For now, it seems the starter will be Joe Flacco, the only one of the four quarterbacks with experience in Kevin Stefanski’s system. There was talk that Kenny Pickett had a real shot at winning the job, but a hamstring injury will set him back due to the time he’s losing.
Starting Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders right away would be risky
The starting job is between Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, although many fans hope to see Dillon Gabriel or, especially, Shedeur Sanders, who has become the true protagonist of this saga and the main reason the Browns are under the media spotlight.
Starting Sanders or Gabriel, especially given the lack of talent surrounding the Browns, would be a serious risk. Browns legend Bernie Kosar gave an interview to local station 92.3 The Fan and issued a warning to head coach Kevin Stefanski about being patient with the rookies.
“Let’s sacrifice those full veteran guys,” Kosar said. “Don’t dissipate the confidence and belief of a young quarterback. We kill more quarterbacks by putting them in there early. … To have the veterans play early in September I think would be very productive for the long-term careers of the team and the young quarterbacks.”
It’s very likely the Browns will start the season with one of the experienced players, but if things fall apart, it’s almost certain that fans will pressure to see one of the rookies on the field – especially Shedeur Sanders. This saga still has many chapters ahead.
