Para Jessica Bouzas, en cambio, era un partido-trampa. La joven española tenía la obligación de ganar a una tenista admirable, pero que por edad podría ser su madre y que aunque físicamente no es evidentemente la de sus mejores tiempos, tiene aún fuerza y tenis para ser competitiva, como comprobó hace dos semanas Peyton Stearns, 37 WTA, en Washington, que salió derrotada ante ella.
El físico podría ser también un problema para Jessica Bouzas, que hace dos días estaba jugando unos cuartos de final de WTA 1.000 en Toronto (cosas de los Masters 1.000 de dos semanas) y ahora tenía enfrente a Venus Williams y la grada de Cincinnati. Pero la tenista gallega no se dejó sorprender ni intimidar. Cometió bastantes errores no forzados, pero llevó prácticamente siempre la delantera en el partido aunque Venus nunca se entregó.
La española empezó mandando 2-0 y luego 4-1. Venus recuperó un ‘break’ pero Jessica se mantuvo firme hasta el final del set. En el segundo volvió a tener 2-0 pero su mítica rival, capaz de seguir golpeando con mucha potencia, le recuperó el servicio perdido y se puso 4-3 por delante, aunque sin ‘break’ de ventaja. La española decidió con tres juegos seguidos, cerrando el partido con 6-4 y 6-4. Venus, ahora, se dirigirá al US Open mientras baraja seguir sobre las pistas, en la medida que pueda, en 2026. Jessica Bouzas jugará ahora contra la canadiense Leylah Fernández, campeona precisamente en Washington.
“No fue nada fácil. Ella es una leyenda. Es un privilegio jugar contra alguien así. Para mí es como un sueño hecho realidad. Nunca pensé que llegaría a enfrentarme a Venus Williams, pero aquí estoy. Simplemente soy afortunada”, aseguró Bouzas tras el partido. “No fue fácil, fue muy duro jugar contra ella. Intentaba meterle mucha intensidad, pero no tenía un respiro. Golpea la bola con muchísima fuerza y quizá no estaba preparada para eso. Aun así, traté de mantenerme concentrada, ser positiva e ir punto a punto”, explicó a pie de pista.
En otros encuentros, Vondrousova venció 6-3 y 6-1 a Cristian, Potapova 6-4 y 6-4 a Siegemund, Joint 6-2 y 6-3 a Minnen, Cirstea 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 a Vekic, Zarazúa 3-6, 6-4 y 6-2 a Putintseva, Ito 6-2 y 7-6 a Ruse y Lys 6-2, 4-6 y 7-5 a Pera.
