Nationalmannschaftskapitänin Xenia Smits verlässt den deutschen Doublesieger HB Ludwigsburg. Dort hatte sie ursprünglich noch bis 2026 Vertrag, doch weil Ludwigsburg einen Insolvenzantrag gestellt hatte, waren Smits und all ihre Kolleginnen freigestellt worden.

Um den Kern der HB Ludwigsburg wollte Nationaltrainer Markus Gaugisch ursprünglich die Mannschaft bilden, die bei der Heim-WM (27. November bis 14. Dezember) den nächsten Schritt Richtung Weltspitze machen sollte. Jetzt geht es darum, dass neben Smits auch andere DHB-Stars wie Viola Leuchter oder Antje Döll neue Klubs finden.

Deutschlands Handballerin des Jahres kehrt zurück in eine gewohnte Umgebung nach Metz, wo sie schon von 2015 bis 2020 aktiv war. Dort entwickelte sie sich von einer talentierten Nachwuchsspielerin zu einem echten Superstar.
In ihrer ersten Zeit bei Metz wurde Smits zum Publikumsliebling, gewann in fünf Jahren gleich vier französische Meistertitel. 2019 erreichte sie mit Metz das Final Four der Champions League.

Allerdings: Der letzte Schritt zum Titel fehlt dem französischen Top-Klub noch, in den letzten beiden Jahren war jeweils im Halbfinale Schluss. Smits: „Jetzt fehlt nur noch der Titel und ich habe große Lust, diesen letzten Schritt mit dem Team in Angriff zu nehmen.“

Für Metz Handball ist Smits ein Glücksfall: Durch die Freistellung der Spielerinnen in Ludwigsburg sind die Verträge – in Smits’ Fall noch ein Jahr – nicht mehr gültig, sie können ablösefrei wechseln.
Metz-Trainer Emmanuel Mayonnade, den die Deutsche bereits kennt, sagt: „Das ist eine außergewöhnliche Chance für uns. Auch wenn wir natürlich nicht glücklich sind über die Insolvenz von Ludwigsburg, die sich in die sehr, sehr lange Liste der Frauenteams einfügt, die heute verschwunden sind.“
Ganz so weit ist es noch nicht, der deutsche Double-Sieger arbeitet noch daran, künftig mit einer deutlich abgespeckten Mannschaft doch noch in der HBF antreten zu können. Aus der Champions League wurde der Verein bereits ausgeschlossen.
