As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for the 2025 NFL season, Patrick Mahomes has expressed his thoughts on the highly competitive AFC West. The Chiefs have been the dominant force in the division for nearly a decade, claiming the division title for the past nine seasons.
Mahomes has been at the forefront of this success for eight of those years, establishing himself as one of the league’s top quarterbacks. This ongoing streak is one of the longest in NFL history, with only the New England Patriots’ 11-year reign in the AFC East surpassing it.

While the Chiefs have maintained their dominance, Mahomes believes the 2025 season could prove to be their toughest challenge in years. The AFC West has seen significant changes, including the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers both making playoff appearances in recent seasons.
Furthermore, the Las Vegas Raiders have made substantial upgrades, bringing in Pete Carroll as head coach and Geno Smith as their new quarterback.
The growing strength of the AFC West
Despite the increased competition, Mahomes remains confident in the Chiefs’ ability to rise to the occasion. During an interview on the ‘Up & Adams Show,’ he emphasized that the AFC West has always been a tough division.
“It’s never easy – our division has always been tough,” Mahomes said. “We’ve just done a good job of being able to win it. But we always feel like our division is tough, and that’s where we start.” His words highlight the belief that, regardless of the challenges, the Chiefs have consistently proven they can handle the pressure.
One key factor in the heightened competition this season is the influx of talented quarterbacks in the division. With Geno Smith now joining the Raiders, Mahomes recognizes the potential for even tougher matchups.
“Obviously, there are a lot of young, really good quarterbacks,” he noted. The division is also filled with experienced, Hall of Fame-worthy coaches, further raising the stakes for every game.
Still, Mahomes remains steadfast in his belief that the Chiefs have the best coach in the league, which gives them a clear edge over their rivals. “But we believe we have the best coach, and we believe if we take care of business and handle things the right way, we can find a way to win the division,” Mahomes said.
He pointed out that if the Chiefs win the AFC West, they’ll be well-positioned for a home playoff game, giving them a clear advantage as they push toward the Super Bowl.
The Broncos, led by second-year quarterback Bo Nix and head coach Sean Payton, finished third in the division last year. The Chargers, with Justin Herbert at quarterback, took second place. Both teams were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, while the Chiefs made another Super Bowl appearance, despite a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
This season, the Chiefs will open with an international game in Brazil, facing the Chargers in a Friday night Week 1 matchup. Kansas City has a remarkable 51-8 record against their AFC West rivals since 2015. As the 2025 season approaches, Mahomes and the Chiefs are ready for the challenge and determined to continue their reign atop the division.
