A common piece of advice for young athletes breaking into professional sports is to “stay grounded and surround yourself with family.” For Shilo Sanders, who recently took his first steps in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, this couldn’t be more true. After playing his very first NFL preseason game, Shilo marked the milestone in a truly special way. Instead of just celebrating on the field, he made a heartfelt gesture back home: gifting his mom, Pilar Sanders, the very jersey he wore during that debut. For Pilar, the moment turned a simple game-day memory into a cherished family treasure.
The Sanders name carries weight in the NFL, especially with Deion Sanders as a Hall of Famer and a football icon. But Shilo’s journey has had its own unique challenges. Proud of making it to this stage for the first time, Shilo’s gesture to his mom underscored the gratitude he feels for the unwavering support that helped him reach this point.

After Shilo revealed in an interview that he first offered his rookie jersey to his father – who declined, according to Shilo because “he expects 30 times more” – some fans questioned the need to mention it. Many felt it would have been simpler just to give the jersey directly to his mom without bringing Deion into it. Still, the love behind the gesture was undeniable, especially as Pilar happily accepted the meaningful gift.
Making his mark in the NFL
In a video shared on his mother’s Instagram, Shilo celebrated his NFL debut and took a moment to thank her for her constant support. He recalled how Pilar traveled to North Carolina for his brother Shedeur’s Browns preseason game, then made her way to Tampa Bay to cheer him on as well. Handing over the Buccaneers #28 jersey to his mom, Shilo made it clear this was more like a tribute to the family who has been by his side through every step.
On the field, Shilo showed promise with a hard-hitting, energetic performance in his first preseason game. But the road ahead isn’t easy. With Tampa Bay’s head coach Todd Bowles, a defensive specialist, scrutinizing every move, Shilo will need to prove he can perform his duties with precision, be in the right place at the right time, and seize every opportunity this preseason offers.

Getty Images Veteran infielder Alex Bregman will be opting out of his contract the Boston Red Sox and becoming a free agent this coming offseason, the New York Post reports. Bregman, 31, is coming off a highly productive 2025 season for Boston in which he slashed .273/.360/.462 (128 OPS+) with 18 home runs and 28 doubles. Although he was limited to 114 games played because of a serious quad strain, Bregman still managed a WAR of 3.5 for the season. He earned his third career All-Star selection. For his career, Bregman boasts an OPS+ of 132 and a WAR of 43.1 across parts of 10 MLB seasons.
