Current Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson and longtime NFL great Troy Aikman have settled a heated trademark dispute involving exclusive rights to the branding of the number eight.

Trademark clash: Jackson and Aikman fight for “EIGHT”
In July 2024, Lamar Jackon filed a complaint with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, asserting that Troy Aikman’s applications to trademark “EIGHT” for use on apparel and accesories could create confusion with Jackson’s established number 8 branding.
Jackson’s legal team emphasized that his trademarks, featuring phrases like “Era 8” and “You 8 yet?”, predated Aikman’s filings. The Ravens signal caller argued that their similarities in sound, appearance, and commercial impression posed a risk of misleading consumers.
The claim, officially filed on July 9, 2024, requested the PTO to halt Aikman’s trademark applications, warning that the overlap could improperly benefit from Jackson’s personal brand and visibility. Aikman’s representative, or his company, was given a response deadline of August 18, 2024.
Resolution: legal battle finally closed
Recent coverage indicates that Aikman and Jackson have reached an agreement to resolve their differences, formally ending the “bitter legal dispute”. Though specific terms of the settlement remain undisclosed, this outcome suggests both sides opted to avoid lengthy litigation, choosing negotiation over courtroom conflict.
The resolution marks a rare instance of harmony between a current NFL superstar and a Hall of Fame legend; both now free to pursue their branding strategies without ongoing legal hurdles.
Fans and apparel retailers alike can look forward to clarity in the marketplace. Jackson continues to promote his “8” image, while Aikman is presumably able to use his own “EIGHT” branding, now with mutual agreement, and without ongoing litigation sowing confusion.
