Deion Sanders appears ready to move forward without his son Shedeur Sanders at quarterback, hinting strongly at who will take over under center for the Colorado Buffaloes in the new era at Folsom Field.
While Shedeur focuses on his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns, the Buffaloes are preparing for their own transition, and all signs point to Kaidon Salter as the successor – especially the words of Coach Prime.

Salter, a four-star prospect with a reported NIL valuation of $404,000 according to On3, brings both experience and production from the Liberty Flames where he established himself as one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in college football.
He amassed 5889 passing yards, 56 touchdowns, and only 17 interceptions through the air, while adding 2006 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground, and his 2023 season was a standout, featuring a Conference USA title, and a Fiesta Bowl appearance – earning him Conference USA MVP honors.
Although Sanders has yet to make an official announcement naming Salter the starter, his recent comments leave little doubt about the direction Colorado is heading ahead of the opener with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
“Kaidon is a guy with multiple talents,” Sanders said, via Rivals. “He can throw the football. He can run the heck out of the football. Sometimes in practice, you don’t get a chance to see how good he is because when you run the quarterback, you know we can’t hit him.
“But, you can see the burst, the speed, the knowledge of reading the defenses, and then he pulls it and keeps it. The kid is going to cause havoc. I’m just telling you.
“It’s going to be a totally different type of offense, kind of which from what you’ve seen us do in the past, because we had a guy that could spin it tremendously.
“But don’t underestimate his throwing ability. We just want him to complete every darn pass he throws in practice and get in a habit of completions, completions, completions, because we know he can run.
“But, when he gets that second part down, it’s going to be a problem, a tremendous problem for all defenses.”
Salter ready to go in 2025/26 NCAA season: Sends message to his teammates
Salter‘s influence has already reached beyond the field as reports from Sports Illustrated indicate that Colorado’s coaching staff views him as the frontrunner to start in 2025.
With the offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur identifying him as his “main guy” during internal team exercises and when each position group was tasked with presenting its leader, Salter‘s presence reportedly stood out as QB1 material.
The quarterback himself made a strong statement to teammates, underscoring the work ethic required to compete for a Big 12 title as he leaves no questions as to what he’s looking for in the new campaign.
“Everybody’s saying they want to make it to that Big 12 championship,” Salter said. “That s**t starts at practice. We got to go out and eat every day.
“Eat every day. If you see your mama leaving your house and you gotta go to school at 6 in the morning, this s**t is for times like that.”
With freshman Julian Lewis also in the mix, there remains a possibility of shared snaps. However, Salter‘s combination of proven college production, leadership qualities, and schematic fit with Shurmur‘s offense makes him the logical choice to guide Colorado’s first season in the post-Shedeur era.
