Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma missed the team’s opening Premier League game against Burnley due to an injury sustained in training, according to head coach Thomas Frank.
Two goals from Richarlison and one from Brennan Johnson gave Spurs a 3-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Frank started Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr in midfield.

Frank did not confirm the extent of Bissouma’s injury but said that it would be examined by the club.
“Unfortunately he got injured in training yesterday, so very unfortunate,” Frank said in his post-match press conference. “An injury we (will) look into how much it is.”
This comes after Bissouma was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain due to disciplinary reasons, which Frank said was related to poor timekeeping. Tottenham went on to lose the match on penalties after PSG staged a comeback to draw level at 2-2 in added time.
“He has been late several times and now this latest time was one too many,” Frank said ahead of the PSG game. “With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and there also need to be consequences and this time there was a consequence for that.
“For me, there has been a consequence and that is for this trip.”
Bissouma was also previously suspended by the club for their first game of the 2024-25 season by former Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou after video footage on social media appeared to show the midfielder inhaling nitrous oxide.
There is uncertainty over Bissouma’s Tottenham future, with his contract at the club set to expire next year and the arrival of Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich increasing competition for minutes in midfield.
In addition to Palhinha, Spurs have brought in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United and Kota Takai from Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale and made Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso’s loan spells permanent this summer. They are also working on a deal for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and have approached Manchester City over a move for Savinho.
Frank said after the Burnley game that the club are looking to add to the squad.
“We are definitely in the market. I said it before, Daniel (Levy) and Johan (Lange) and Vinai (Venkatesham) are working relentlessly to try to do their best to improve the squad, but we only want to improve the squad if we can’t get players in that can improve the squad,” said Frank.
Tottenham visit City next Saturday in their second Premier League game of the 2025-26 campaign.
