Should the Kansas City Chiefs be concerned? Despite being widely regarded as a Super Bowl contender, quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ squad is no longer the team to beat in the NFL. According to ESPN’s latest power rankings, they’ve been overtaken by their arch-rival in the race for the Vince Lombardi Trophy-the Philadelphia Eagles.
Back in April, following the 2025 NFL Draft, ESPN ranked head coach Andy Reid’s Chiefs as the top team in the league. Their draft selections, combined with savvy free agency moves, made them the undisputed number one.
Fast forward three months, and after back-to-back preseason losses to the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, the Chiefs have slipped slightly in the rankings. But it’s not just the underwhelming performance of their backups that’s raising eyebrows-the uncertain future of wide receiver Rashee Rice is also weighing heavily on the team’s outlook, ESPN reported.
Why did the Chiefs drop?
Rice has become a source of concern for the Chiefs’ front office on two fronts. First, there’s the ACL injury that sidelined him in Week 4 of the 2024 season. Although he’s now medically cleared, regaining competitive rhythm could take several more games.
The second issue is more troubling. Rice is scheduled for a disciplinary hearing on September 30 to determine the consequences of a car accident he was involved in-an incident that left four people injured.
ESPN analyst Nate Taylor noted, “If [Rice] excels in September, the Chiefs could have another hot start. If Rice struggles, Kansas City will have to place much of the passing attack on the shoulders of 35-year-old Travis Kelce.”
Eagles soar to No. 1
Thanks to aggressive draft moves that addressed key gaps left by free agency, the Philadelphia Eagles now sit atop ESPN’s power rankings. Head coach Nick Sirianni’s squad isn’t just expected to return to the Big Game-they’re the leading candidate to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
One potential weak spot for Philadelphia is new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, who replaces the highly successful Kellen Moore. However, if Patullo can harness the immense talent at his disposal, the Eagles could still dominate-and crush anyone in their path, including the Chiefs.
