Potential backup quarterback options for Daniel Jones with the Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are facing a dilemma at quarterback. Anthony Richardson has yet to meet expectations, leaving the team unsure of his future, while newly acquired Daniel Jones is set to be the starter. Speculation is growing that Richardson could be traded before the season begins, opening the door for potential moves in the quarterback market.

Although the Colts haven’t secured any victories during the preseason, Daniel Jones has delivered solid performances, earning positive reviews for his play. This has intensified speculation over Anthony Richardson’s future, making it one of the biggest storylines heading into the regular season.

Potential quarterback trade on the horizon for the Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are aiming for a stronger season than last year, seeking more memorable victories and a top spot in the AFC South. To achieve this, they need a roster built to compete at a high level, with key players ready to lead the charge.

However, recent games and team reports indicate that Anthony Richardson has fallen behind Daniel Jones in the pecking order, casting doubt on his future with the Colts. Bleacher Report has even suggested a possible trade to secure a reliable backup quarterback.

The report indicates that the Colts have set their sights on Tanner McKee, the backup quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. “If Philadelphia wants to remain on top, it will need to continue to load up on picks,” Bleacher Report noted.

“The team added to its arsenal by trading backup quarterback Kenny Pickett at the start of the offseason and could land 2026 draft selections by again sending off one of Jalen Hurts’ understudies,” the report added.

Tanner McKee, a former Super Bowl champion, has demonstrated his talent with the Eagles, though he has often played in the shadow of Jalen Hurts. In his two appearances in 2024, McKee completed 30 of 45 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns, showcasing his potential as a reliable backup.

Tanner McKee: A chance to prove his NFL potential

It’s clear that there’s no debate over the starting quarterback role in Philadelphia, as Jalen Hurts has firmly established himself as the team’s leader, guiding the Eagles to the last Super Bowl and anchoring their offense.

This move could benefit both the Eagles and McKee. Philadelphia gains peace of mind at quarterback, while McKee, still young but talented, would join the Colts to challenge Daniel Jones for the starting role, setting up a competitive battle for leadership of the offense.

Currently, the Colts’ quarterback situation remains uncertain, a position that has been in flux in recent years. With Anthony Richardson’s future in doubt, several names are emerging, but Tanner McKee appears to be the frontrunner, potentially giving the team a stronger battle at QB and even competing for the starting role against Daniel Jones.
