„Snažil jsem se od toho co nejvíc distancovat. Řešilo to vedení klubu s agentem a českým svazem. Byl jsem připravený sbalit si věci a odletět do Texasu, kde se šampionát konal,“ vyprávěl Štěbeták. Stejný osud potkal i jeho kamaráda a spoluhráče z Portlandu Maxe Pšeničku. I na něj měl realizační tým v čele s koučem Davidem Čermákem políčeno.
Řešilo se, zda český svaz podal žádost na jejich uvolnění správně. Teď už je to jedno, turnaj dávno skončil a ani jeden z výše zmíněných hokejistů na něm zkrátka nestartoval. Pro oba to byla smůla, protože se jednalo o jejich rozlučku s touto věkovou kategorií.

„S Maxem jsme se o tom bavili a zhodnotili jsme, že na to máme stejný názor. Pak si nás zavolali trenéři Portlandu a řekli nám, ať se soustředíme na další zápas a že se o ostatní postarají oni,“ vyprávěl Štěbeták.
Odchovanec Jihlavy má za sebou první rok v Portlandu a obecně v Severní Americe. Město ze severozápadu státu Oregon jej okouzlilo. „Mám skvělou náhradní rodinu. Sedl jsem si i se všemi spoluhráči. Byl jsem se dokonce dvakrát podívat na basketbalové NBA. Klub nám dokonce sehnal lístky. Viděl jsem i slavné Lakers, ale LeBron James ani Dončić bohužel nehráli, protože bylo krátce před play off,“ pousmál se brankář.
Osmnáctiletý hokejista prožil trpké léto. Na draftu měl být nejvýše postaveným českým brankářem, ale stejně jako jeho krajané ostrouhal. Teprve podruhé od roku 2010 nemělo Česko na výběru nováčků NHL ani jednoho draftovaného brankáře.
„Očekávání byla velká, ale neberu to jako konec nebo něco špatného. Využiju to jako motivaci do další sezony. Už vím, co týmy z NHL chtějí a udělám vše pro to, abych je letos přesvědčil,“ uvedl odchovanec Jihlavy.
Jedním ze způsobů, jak přesvědčit skauty, je probojovat se do sestavy na šampionát dvacetiletých. Ten se na přelomu roku bude konat ve Spojených státech. Turnaj pěti v Chomutově je ale pro hráče jako je Štěbeták generálkou. Patrik Augusta a jeho realizační tým totiž hráče ze zámoří naposledy uvidí na vlastní oči.
