Army commended the actions of sophomore football player Larry Pickett Jr. after Pickett rescued someone from a wrecked vehicle on Saturday night.
Safety Larry Pickett Jr. and his family came upon an SUV that was resting between a utility pole and a tree. In the video his father posted to Facebook, Pickett and his father pulled a man from the car as you can see embers below the vehicle.

Just seconds after the man was extricated from the car, it caught fire. The video is below.
“Just after midnight, I watched in awe as my son, Larry Pickett Jr., ran toward a burning vehicle, ignoring the downed power lines crackling around it,” Larry Pickett Sr. wrote. “With immense courage, he pulled a man to safety, saving him from a fiery fate.
“This is more than a display of leadership; it’s a testament to the character West Point is building in him — a readiness to go into the line of fire, not just for his country, but for anyone who needs it. To see that courage and selflessness in action firsthand was truly incredible.”
Pickett Sr. told Raleigh TV station ABC 11 that his family was driving back to West Point after having dinner in Times Square when they came upon the crash in Fort Montgomery, New York.
“There was no discussion. My son just jumped right into action,” Larry Pickett Sr. said. “He mentioned his military training kicked in, and we pulled him out. He took care of him on the side of the road until the police officers got there. And then the fire department got there shortly after.”
Army coach Jeff Monken said in a social media post that “Larry’s heroic actions embody everything we strive to instill in our cadet-athletes — courage, selflessness, and a willingness to put others before themselves. In that critical moment, he didn’t think of himself, only of helping another person in need.”
Pickett got the first playing time of his career in Army’s Week 1 loss to Tarleton State on Friday night. The sophomore had one tackle in the 30-27 double-overtime loss. A native of Raleigh, Pickett played at Enloe High School and his uncle is former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Ike Taylor.
