en los tiempos que corren, alcanzar la treintena de edad supone entrar el momento de mayor madurez en la carrera de un futbolista. Bien lo saben en la Serie A, donde encontramos hasta 92 jugadores que superan la barrera de los 30 años. Un grupo de futbolistas entre los que podría encontrarse un Carlos Cuesta (Palma de Mallorca, 1995) que anoche sumó su primera victoria en el ‘Calcio’… como entrenador del Parma.
El pasado 29 de julio sopló las velas para celebrar el cambio de década. Pero, menos de un mes antes, recibió la llamada del Parma para reemplazar a un Cristian Chivu que puso rumbo a su querido Inter de Milán. Una oferta irrechazable… que le convertía en el entrenador más joven de las cinco grandes ligas.
Tras perder a piezas clave durante como Giovanni Leoni o Ange-Yoan Bonny, suponía una apuesta arriesgada para un Parma cuyo objetivo pasa por mantener la categoría. Sobre todo, teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de ‘perros viejos’ que siguen ocupando los banquillos de la Serie A. “La edad puede sorprender a muchos, pero para mí es solo un número. Mi edad no será una excusa”.
Ahora bien, a pesar de su corta edad, Carlos Cuesta ya podía presumir de un currículum bastante interesante. Con apenas 15 años, ya entrenaba en el Santa Catalina de su Mallorca natal y, en 2014, hizo las maletas para entrar en la cantera de un Atlético de Madrid donde permaneció cuatro temporadas hasta que, en 2018, puso rumbo a la Juventus.
Es un talento excepcional y merece oportunidades para crecer
Por aquellos tiempos, Carlos Cuesta se dedicaba -y lo sigue haciendo- a estudiar a los mejores entrenadores del mundo. Fue entonces cuando uno de esos informes llegó a manos de un Mikel Arteta que, en agosto de 2020, lo reclutó para su cuerpo técnico en el Arsenal. “No me opondría en el camino de Carlos si quisiera irse. Es un talento excepcional y merece oportunidades para crecer”, declaró Mikel cuando fue tentado por el Norwich hace menos de un año.
Un ‘máster’ de cinco años en los que Carlos Cuesta evolucionó al mismo ritmo que lo hizo el proyecto ‘gunner’… llamando la atención de un Parma donde a sus órdenes apenas tiene dos jugadores mayores que él: Milan Djuric (35) y Hernani (31). “No me preocupa que pueda haber jugadores mayores que yo. Cuando fui al Arsenal tenía 24 años, simplemente intenté que se entendiera mi trabajo y demostrar que soy un buen entrenador”.

Aunque se estrenó con victoria ante el Pescara en la primera ronda de Coppa y superó al Spezia por penaltis para ‘colarse’ en octavos, el arranque en Serie A -dos derrotas y dos empates- había comenzado a levantar las primeras dudas.
Pero, gracias a un doblete de Mateo Pellegrino, tumbó al Torino para llevar al Parma hacia su primera victoria. “Debemos disfrutar. Vimos un equipo valiente, con personalidad y calidad. Esta victoria se la dedico a mi esposa, que sufrió conmigo hasta el final en el Tardini”, reconocía después del choque.
