Diante do interesse dos merengues, Saviola não hesitou e firmou contrato.

O argentino assinou com o clube catalão em 2001. Pelo Barcelona, teve dois empréstimos realizados, um para o Mônaco, da França, e outro para o Sevilha, da Espanha.
— Queria que a minha carreira continuasse a crescer e seguir em clubes importantes, que é aquilo que todos os jogadores procuram. O melhor que te pode acontecer é chegar à Europa e continuar em clubes grandes, por isso, quando o Real Madrid mostrou interesse, não podia recusar a possibilidade de fazer parte da sua história.
Saviola jogou apenas 31 jogos em duas temporadas pelos merengues. Por lá, competia com Raúl, Van Nistelrooy e Higuaín. Apesar do baixo desempenho, não se mostrou arrependido da decisão.
— Conseguimos ganhar o campeonato e fazer história. E a partir do momento em que chega ao clube e joga o primeiro jogo, percebe que se respira e vive uma história única.
