Los Leones del Seven acaban cuartos en el torneo de Singapur

La selección española de rugby 7 ha sido cuarta del torneo de Singapur, sexta y última etapa de la temporada regular de las Series Mundiales, después de perder este domingo frente a Kenia en semifinales (5-12) y contra Argentina (14-33) en el duelo por la medalla de bronce.

A pesar de terminar con estas dos derrotas la campaña, que tendrá su epílogo con las Finales de Los Ángeles (Estados Unidos) dentro de cuatro semanas, España ha firmado una temporada histórica debido a su tercera plaza en la clasificación general, sólo por detrás de Argentina y Fiyi.

Dos ensayos de Patrick Odongo, uno de los máximos anotadores y jugador revelación de la temporada, sellaron la suerte de la semifinal en una primera parte que empezó con una galopada solitaria del ala keniano y acabó con una sencilla marca en superioridad numérica debido a la exclusión temporal de Paco Cosculluela (0-12).

Extenuados por el esfuerzo de esta gira asiática, los españoles cometieron numerosos errores de manejo en el segundo tiempo y sólo pudieron anotar a un minuto para el final mediante Jaime Manteca, que se aprovechó de un fallo del equipo africano en la apertura del oval tras una melé.

España ganó la posesión en la última jugada para intentar marcar el ensayo transformado que le hubiera dado la prórroga pero Pol Pla dejó caer el oval al ser placado y Kenia evitó que los ‘Leones’ accediesen a la segunda final de su historia (5-12).

Los dos ensayos con los que el equipo nacional se adelantó contra Argentina en la final de consolación fueron contra el curso del juego, ya que eran los ‘Pumas’ quienes dominaban hasta que la patada a seguir de Juan Ramos a un balón suelto permitió la carrera de Paco Cosculluela, que cedió el ensayo a Asier Pérez al ser derribado a un metro de la línea por una zancadilla de Matías Osadczuk.

Pol Pla dobló la renta española con una jugada similar al aprovechar otro error de manejo de los argentinos que, sin embargo, encadenaron dos ensayos para empatar en el último minuto del primer tiempo, gracias a Marcos Moneta, que atacó en solitario desde la base de la melé, y a Tobías Wade.

La segunda parte fue un monólogo de Argentina, ya que España no pudo oponerse a su poderío en los puntos de encuentro, y cayeron de forma ineluctable tres ensayos posados por Mateo Graziano, Lucho González Rizzoni y Agustín Fraga que sentenciaron el rotundo marcador de 14-33.
