Dawn Staley‘s expensive Louis Vuitton tracksuit caught the eyes as the South Carolina Gamecocks took on the UConn Huskies in the NCAA‘s Women’s Basketball National Championship Game, but how did Geno Auriemma manage to steal the limelight too?
In one of the biggest games of Staley‘s coaching career, she rocked up in a $7600 tracksuit adorned with turquoise beads on the collar, pockets and her zipper to make sure she stood out under the bright lights of the Amalie Arena.
But as her side slipped to a 82-59 loss on the big stage against the 38-3 Huskies, it was Auriemma who had the last laugh as he secured his 12th NCAA title in an exceptional record spanning 30 years.
The 71-year-old from Italy boasts an incredible 1250-165 record across his career (.883) and has an exceptional 143-24 run in NCAA Division I tournaments, yielding 24 Final Four appearances.
The eight-time Naismith Coach of the Year is also a three-time Olympic gold medallist with the United States and his latest college basketball win, his landmark 1250th, only serves to seal his legacy as the greatest women’s college basketball coach of all-time.
His coaching talent was on show in force on April 6 as he tactically out-foxed Staley throughout the entire night and gave his players the platform to flourish as Sarah Strong produced 24 points, 15 rebounds and five assists.
Supporting her was Azzi Fudd with 24 points, one assist and five rebounds and Paige Bueckers with 17 points, three assists and six rebounds as the trio became the 2024/25 NCAA champions.
For the Gamecocks, they struggled across the board. Only Joyce Edwards and Tessa Johnson managed to shoot 10+ points as they limped over the season finish line with a whimper against the Huskies.
When is the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game 2025?
Fans can rejoice, the basketball action is not yet over as the Houston Cougars take on the Florida Gators in the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game.
The winner of the 2024/25 college basketball season will be determined on Monday, April 7 from 20:50 ET/17:50 PT, live on CBS Sports, at the Alamodome.
