Meghan Markle has made headlines once again for offering the public a rare peek into her private life as a mother. In a move that surprised royal watchers and social media followers, Markle shared photos and video clips of her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, on her official Instagram account.
The footage was part of a promotional push for her As Ever lifestyle brand and her upcoming Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have long maintained a strong boundary between their children and the public eye, citing privacy and security concerns.
Typically, any visuals of Archie and Lilibet are carefully selected-often showing the children from behind or avoiding facial details altogether. Yet Markle‘s recent posts reflect a subtle shift, one that suggests she’s more open to letting the world see fragments of her family life.
This small but symbolic act has reportedly caused some tension behind closed doors. Prince Harry, still shaped by his traumatic experiences growing up in the royal spotlight, has always been fiercely protective of his children’s privacy.
His deep mistrust of the media, stemming from the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, has made him cautious about any public exposure, especially for Archie and Lilibet.
A clash of childhoods
Royal insiders say that this difference in perspective between Harry and Meghan isn’t new, but the recent posts may have reignited an ongoing discussion. Meghan, who grew up in California and worked in Hollywood, is more comfortable with public life and sees value in allowing her children to experience the world without extreme restrictions.
According to The Sun’s royal editor Matt Wilkinson, this philosophical divide runs deep.
“My understanding of this is that, up to a certain stage, Harry would much rather his children were not seen,” Wilkinson said during an episode of A Right Royal Podcast. “Whereas Meghan grew up in California… She doesn’t want to hide them away.
“I think Harry’s living in [like things are] the way they were when he was a child […] the media landscape has shifted.”
That shift is something Meghan appears to acknowledge and even embrace. She recently told the New York Times that she wants Archie and Lilibet to “connect with her home life and her work.” Her intention seems rooted not in self-promotion but in allowing her children to understand her world and build their own identities within it.
Still, this more open approach has raised eyebrows-not only because it contrasts Harry’s views but also because of how it might align with the expectations of the royal family.
Harry’s reluctance to involve his children in public-facing initiatives mirrors the caution of his father, King Charles III, and brother, Prince William, who reportedly oppose using royal titles or children to further commercial ventures.
“He doesn’t want them to be [photographed]. He’s got this idea that if he takes them outside Montecito, there is a hoard of us out there trying to take photos of his kids,” Wilkinson added.
