Treinador sensação na Europa, Splitter reconhece aposta do Paris, conta sobre desafios e ainda não pensa em seleção

Uma das principais sensações da temporada da Euroliga de basquete e um dos melhores colocados da atual liga francesa, o Paris Basketball conta com um toque brasileiro que renova as esperanças do esporte por aqui. Não se contentando em ser o primeiro campeão em verde e amarelo da história da NBA, com o San Antonio Spurs, em 2014, Tiago Splitter virou pioneiro do país no cargo de treinador do mais alto nível do basquete europeu.

Com cinco anos de experiência como auxiliar em Brooklyn Nets e Houston Rockets (2019 a 2024), o ex-pivô descobriu que a equipe fundada em 2018 estava atrás de um treinador, e se pôs à disposição. A “entrevista pela vaga” deu certo até demais, com o Paris acreditando em sua bagagem nas funções de scouter, analista de jogos e organizador de treinos, contratando-o no último mês de julho.

— Eu acho que foi uma formação bem completa para chegar bem ao Paris. Que fez uma grande aposta. Eu não vou mentir — declara Splitter em entrevista exclusiva ao GLOBO. — Eu sei que eles contrataram um técnico tão jovem como eu, para ser o líder de um time novato na Euroliga. Foi uma aposta. Sou grato ao Paris.

Com 40 anos completados em janeiro, também comandou a seleção brasileira sub-23 em um torneio em 2022, e foi auxiliar de Aleksandar Petrovic na equipe que disputou a Olimpíada de Paris-2024. A coincidência em sua atual cidade também permitiu que relembrasse o que ele chama de “elemento” Fiba — basquete seguindo as regras da federação internacional —, no qual atuou por uma década, sobretudo na Espanha.

Mesmo assim, a nova experiência de ter que guiar um time e fazer os jogadores aderirem às suas ideias vem sendo o maior desafio.

— O mais difícil é essa parte de ser professor. Motivar, ensinar a disciplina que você precisa todos os dias para conseguir um resultado. Aos poucos, você vai entendendo como dar o clique em cada jogador, conhecendo-os como pessoa e atleta — reflete: — No final das contas, você tem que ser um líder.

Em seu primeiro trabalho como head coach, Splitter fez do Paris um dos times mais chamativos da França e da Europa pela rapidez do jogo e as constantes bolas de três. Acima de estilo, sua prioridade é ser inteligente para aproveitar o elenco que possui. As muitas horas de estudo nos últimos nove meses vêm sendo reconhecidas, e o brasileiro foi eleito o melhor treinador do primeiro turno da Euroliga. Viajar pelo Velho Continente lhe tem feito bem.

— É impressionante. Eu ando na Sérvia, Grécia, Turquia… As pessoas na rua me conhecem muito mais que no Brasil ou em qualquer outro lugar do mundo. Todo mundo entende basquete, segue o basquete e tem uma paixão enorme — aponta.

É inevitável olhar para a carreira de Splitter e não pensar que ele pode assumir um time da NBA algum dia, ou o comando da seleção. Apesar de se mostrar empolgado com a geração do país, e apontar que os pilares do futuro são Gui Santos (Golden State Warriors), Yago (Estrela Vermelha-SER) e Bruno Caboclo (Hapoel Tel Aviv-ISR)— os dois últimos atuam no basquete europeu —, porém, o técnico abre o jogo e diz não pensar em nada além do atual desafio na França.

— Eu já tive algumas conversas com a Confederação (CBB), mas, para mim, é muito difícil conciliar tudo. Aqui, são nove meses e meio sem parar um dia. E se eu fizer isso durante doze meses do ano, eu vou explodir — afirma. — Realmente, é difícil você conciliar Liga Francesa, Euroliga, Copa da França… acabar o ano e já sair direto, pegar a seleção, competir e voltar para uma pré-temporada. Esse é o ritmo. A seleção é algo que gostaria muito, mas, no momento, é inviável para a minha saúde física, mental e familiar.

Amanhã, às 16h, Splitter comanda o Paris em um desafio decisivo, em visita ao Real Madrid, pelo play-in (repescagem) da Euroliga. Oitava colocada da fase de classificação, a equipe francesa busca um lugar nos playoffs.
