Rob Manfred, comisionado de la MLB, tomó la palabra sobre los nuevos bates torpedo que tanta polémica han despertado en el inicio de la temporada 2025.
Los resultados del nuevo bat fueron evidentes desde los primeros partidos, con unos New York Yankees imponiendo varias marcas de cuadrangulares en contra de Milwaukee Brewers, y eso de inmediato despertó el interés y sugirió varias teorías de conspiración.
Manfred, en una sesión de preguntas y respuestas con The New York Times, afirmó que los bates torpedos que los Yankees y otros equipos están usando para conseguir victorias a principios de temporada son “absolutamente buenos para el beisbol”.

Esas teorías conspiratorias señalan que la MLB quiere que los Yankees sumen victorias, pero desde el punto de vista empresarial, los bates torpedo han generado la atención de toda la afición a la pelota caliente en un momento en que los ratings están en declive, al grado que ESPN finaliza en esta temporada una larga colaboración televisiva con las Grandes Ligas.
Creo que temas como el bate torpedo y el debate en torno a él demuestran que el beisbol aún ocupa un lugar único en nuestra cultura, porque la gente se vuelve loca por algo que, al fin y al cabo, no es nada. Los bates cumplen las reglas.
Los bates torpedo tienen una mayor parte del cañón centrada en el punto de contacto frecuente e individualizado en cada jugador.
“De hecho, los jugadores han estado cambiando el punto óptimo de los bates desde hace muchos años”, agregó Manfred. “Pero esto demuestra que hay algo en el juego que es más importante que lo que se capta por los índices de audiencia, los ingresos o cualquier otra cosa, cuando se discute y debate al respecto”.
Los pitchers comenzaron a quejarse de los bates torpedo durante el fin de semana inaugural, especialmente cuando los Bombarderos del Bronx igualaron una marca de jonrones en una sola serie con 15 vuelacercas en su serie inicial de la temporada contra Milwaukee, nueve de ellos en un solo partido.
Giancarlo Stanton, quien tuvo una postemporada memorable cuando los Yankees llegaron a la Serie Mundial de 2024, fue uno de los jugadores de la MLB que usó un bate torpedo la temporada pasada.
Esta temporada, Stanton está fuera de acción por una lesión de codo, pero se negó a establecer una correlación entre ambas, según informó The Post.
Manfred a favor de un juego más dinámico
Con frecuencia se acusa a los deportes de modificar sus reglas para favorecer la anotación y la ofensiva con el fin de captar la atención de los aficionados.
Manfred dijo que la MLB no busca necesariamente generar más jonrones, sino más bien reducir el tiempo de inactividad.
“A menudo se habla del equilibrio entre el pitcheo y el bateo y ese tipo de cuestiones. Algo que aprendimos a través de toda la investigación que hicimos con los aficionados es que el atletismo es lo más importante, quizás más que cualquier otra cosa”, explicó Manfred.
“Cualquier cosa que promueva el atletismo defensivo, las bases robadas. La acción, el movimiento, la capacidad de demostrar lo atlético que eres. Cualquier cambio que permita mostrar el atletismo de tus jugadores es fundamental”, concluyó el comisionado.
