El boxeo está de luto tras conocerse la noticia de que el púgil nigeriano Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju (13-8-2; 12 KOs) falleció tristemente después de su pelea del peso semipesado contra Jon ‘Power’ Mbanugu (12-1-1; 12 KOs) en Ghana el pasado viernes 28 de marzo. Precisamente el Comité Olímpico y la Autoridad de Boxeo de este país confirmaron el deceso del deportista, indicando que, después de recibir los primeros auxilios, fue trasladado al Hospital Universitario Korle-Bu, donde fue declarado muerto apenas 30 minutos después de su llegada.
El boxeador de 31 años, nacido en Lagos el 8 de diciembre de 1993, era conocido con el sobrenombre de ‘Success’ (Éxito). La pelea estaba siendo intensa y, a falta de 15 segundos para el fin del tercer asalto, Olanrewaju se desplomó repentinamente. Segundos antes incluso sonría sobre el ring después de los ataques de su rival. No hubo un golpe rotundo que noqueara a Olanrewaju; simplemente colapsó de forma súbita y cayó contra las cuerdas.
El árbitro fue el primero en lanzarse a ayudar al púgil y el médica entró en el ring a toda velocidad. Hasta donde se puede apreciar en las imágenes, lo primero que hicieron fue comprobar las vías respiratorias del boxeador. Tras varios minutos, Gabriel fue trasladado al hospital.
Olanrewaju se convirtió en profesional en julio de 2019 y ganó sus primeras tres peleas y en la cuarta se enfrentó con Olanrewaju Durodola por el título africano de peso crucero. Durodola, un rival de talla mundial, controló como quiso a ‘Success’, que no pudo salir de su esquina para el quinto asalto. Regresó con fuerza para ganar sus siguientes seis peleas por KO y conquistó el campeonato nigeriano del semipesado a finales de 2021. Más tarde se convirtió en campeón de la Unión de Boxeo de África Occidental de esta misma división en septiembre de 2023. Fue su última victoria, pues en 2024 encadenó una racha perdedora de cuatro combates, aunque sólo fue noqueado en uno de estos.
