The vast majority of hockey people would grab Connor McDavid if they could choose one player to build their team around.

Funny enough, when the votes are counted for the Hart Trophy at the conclusion of this season, do not be surprised if the Edmonton Oilers captain is down the list—maybe not even in the top five.

When the regular season reaches the finish line in just over two weeks, the votes must be cast for the player judged most valuable to their team.

With McDavid’s contributions below his usual stratospheric standards, it will be a wide-open race, with plenty of candidates to be honored.

Here is our fantastic four, plus a few others who surely deserve attention.

Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers

While McDavid has been limited, Draisaitl has been the engine driving Edmonton’s hopes of returning to the Stanley Cup Final—and this time winning it. In his first game back from injury on Saturday, Draisaitl carried the Oilers to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Flames, scoring both the tying tally late in the third period and then the overtime winner. Draisaitl leads the league in goals (51), game-winning goals (11) and overtime winners (six). Do not be shocked if he wins his second Hart Trophy.

Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche

This season has been an absolute roller coaster for the Avalanche. Their roster turnover on the fly has been significant, not to mention a variety of injuries and issues that have impacted the lineup. Through it all, MacKinnon has been a dynamo. Last year’s Hart Trophy winner is tied for the league lead in points (109) and tops in assists (79). The Avalanche loaded up at the trade deadline for another Stanley Cup run, but undoubtedly, MacKinnon is the player who leads the charge.

Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets

The Jets are having a banner season from a variety of players, including Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele, but unquestionably the player who puts the “Win” in Winnipeg is Hellebuyck. The favorite for the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender has the league’s best goals-against average (2.01), save percentage (.925) and wins (43) among anybody who has played 20 or more games.

Nikita Kucherov, Tampa Bay Lightning

Kucherov has also won a Hart Trophy before, back in 2019, and merits serious consideration again. The Lightning are not the team they were back in those days, but once again have themselves in the Stanley Cup mix with Kucherov leading the way. He tops the league with 109 points and power-play points (40). This was supposed to be a season the Lightning took a step back, but they are again in the mix for the Atlantic Division title.

The list of candidates for Hart Trophy votes does not end there. Thanks to defenseman Zach Werenski, the Columbus Blue Jackets are in the playoff mix in a season that was supposed to be a struggle and then began in horror with the death of star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother on the eve of the season.

The Washington Capitals are atop the Eastern Conference, in huge part thanks to Alex Ovechkin’s 37 goals and chase for Wayne Gretzky’s career mark.

Look at the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have an outstanding core four of forwards, but Mitch Marner is the most consistent of them all.

In a season that has so many legitimate contenders for the Stanley Cup, it is fitting there are so many contenders for the league’s MVP award.

Rangers hire former Marlins manager Skip Schumaker to replace Bruce Bochy

The Texas Rangers are hiring Skip Schumaker as their next manager, replacing World Series winner Bruce Bochy, the club announced Friday. Schumaker has reportedly agreed to a four-year deal. The hire is hardly a surprising one. Schumaker spent the 2025 season as a special advisor to Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young. Back when that hire was announced, there was speculation that the 45-year-old's real job was manager-in-waiting for the 70-year-old Bochy, and that is now coming to pass.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt was reported by the Associated Press earlier Friday that Schumaker was the central focus of the Rangers' managerial search.Bochy and the Rangers "mutually" parted ways soon after a disappointing 2025 regular season, with the club noting that Bochy was offered an advisor role in the front office. It's unclear if Bochy will take them up on that, find a job with […]

Red Sox’s bold bets on ace Garrett Crochet and rookie Roman Anthony worked out. But it’s not enough to be considered serious contenders

In the end, the Red Sox weren’t good enough. There were, along the way, illusions to the contrary. Take, for instance, a scintillating performance from ace Garrett Crochet in the AL wild-card opener that put Boston in the driver's seat. Still, it proved to be false hope. The Red Sox faltered late in a goose-bumping Game 2 before being absolutely dominated by rookie hurler Cam Schlittler in an all-deciding Game 3.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhy exactly Boston’s topsy-turvy 2025 season ended early can be chalk-talked into oblivion. A series of unfortunate, late-season injuries to star rookie Roman Anthony and No. 2 starter Lucas Giolito undoubtedly played a role in the team’s downfall. So did a string of critical mistakes in Game 2 that tipped the scales toward the Yankees, namely a failed bunt attempt by Ceddanne Rafaela, a botched diving catch by Jarren Duran and […]

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert addresses player criticism, CBA, officiating, job security

LAS VEGAS — After a week embroiled in criticism by players, WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert used her annual address before Game 1 of the finals to vow to repair trust with the league’s players, create a new multi-stakeholder task force to evaluate WNBA officiating, and to reiterate that she believes she is well-positioned to take the league into the future.AdvertisementEngelbert also refuted some of the blistering accusations made by Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier earlier this week, specifically denying telling Collier in a private conversation last winter that Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark “should be grateful” for her lucrative endorsement deals because of the WNBA’s platforms.“Obviously, I did not make those comments,” Engelbert said. “There’s a lot of inaccuracies reported out there, and I certainly did not say that.”Engelbert said she and Collier have exchanged text messages and have plans […]

Pressure’s on Cubs, Brewers with NLCS berth at stake. But who’s feeling it more?

MILWAUKEE —  In late July, Milwaukee Brewers mainstay Christian Yelich had a sly grin on his face when a couple of Chicago reporters asked about the rivalry with the Cubs.“It kind of feels like we’re just playing with house money,” he said that night. “They’re supposed to win the division. They’re supposed to have high expectations. … So if they don’t win the division, I’m sure it’ll be pretty disappointing.”AdvertisementThe teams were tied, or close to it, when he said it.
