Joao Pedro is set to return to Brighton & Hove Albion’s starting line-up at home to Aston Villa on Wednesday night to spearhead their challenge to qualify for Europe.
The 23-year-old forward was used from the bench in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final loss on penalties against Nottingham Forest at the Amex Stadium, having been involved with Brazil in South American qualifiers during the international break.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler started the game instead with Danny Welbeck, who made way for Joao Pedro in the 72nd minute of the tie which ended 0-0 after extra time.
“We decided we have to take care of his health,” Hurzeler told The Athletic at his pre-match press conference for Villa’s visit. “We had to let him recover and not start the game.
“That is always a thing where you have to talk to players, make a decision and hope they come through this period with a lot of games with their national duties.
“That is what we always try to figure out together with the medical team, with the player. Of course, it played a part in our decision making that Joao was with the Brazilian national team.”
Joao Pedro’s right knee was bandaged when he came on against Forest. He played for 60 minutes in Brazil’s 2-1 win at home to Colombia and was an unused substitute five days later in a 4-1 defeat away to world champions Argentina, which led to the sacking of head coach Dorival Junior.
Joao Pedro has eight goals and seven assists in 26 appearances for Brighton this season. He is also the regular penalty taker, scoring with the first in the shoot-out against
Forest which Hurzeler’s side lost 4-3. The only penalty he has not successfully converted in 14 attempts for the club in regular play came against Villa at the Amex in May of last season when keeper Robin Olsen made a save. Joao Pedro headed in the rebound to earn a 1-0 win.
The onus is on Joao Pedro and Welbeck to fire seventh-placed Brighton into Europe, with regular No. 10 Georginio Rutter potentially ruled out of the remaining nine league matches by ankle damage suffered in the second half against Forest.
