Vinicius sufrió una dura entrada de Jon Ander Olasagasti en el partido que el Real Madrid acabó empatando 4-4 en la prórroga para eliminar a la Real Sociedad en semifinales de la Copa del Rey.
En la segunda parte de la prórroga Olasagasti cazó a Vinicius, en una de las peores entradas que ha sufrido el brasileño a lo largo de su carrera.

El árbitro Alberola Rojas sacó tarjeta amarilla a Olasagasti a pesar de las insistentes protestas de los jugadores del Madrid pidiendo la roja.
En la polémica entrada Olasagasti derribó a Vincius con los tacos por delante y sin opción a jugar el balón.
En la retransmisión de Fútbol en Movistar Plus+ primero catalogaron la entrada como de “naranja”, para posteriormente cambiar de opinión y pedir la tarjeta roja para Olasagasti.

“Si no hay sangre no se pita nada. Dais el mensaje de que hay que clavarle los tacos, y dejarle una huella como si fuese una vaca. Sellarla”, replicó Varela a los matices que planteó Pérez Burrull para no sacar la tarjeta roja.
