Im Zoff um die österreichische Nationalmannschaft und Trainer Ralf Rangnick (66) meldet sich nun auch David Alaba (32) zu Wort. Der Anführer des ÖFB-Teams wird von verschiedenen Medien zitiert: „Ich war schon sehr erstaunt, als ich das gelesen habe. Wir Spieler reden natürlich auch untereinander darüber und haben eine klare Meinung.“
[–>Und: „Wir stehen für Zusammenhalt und Geschlossenheit. Und wir haben gar kein Verständnis dafür, wenn unser Teamchef aus den eigenen Reihen so attackiert wird. Das ist nicht gut für unsere Mannschaft und unseren kompletten Verband.“
Was meint Alaba? Seit Monaten bereits gibt es Streit im Verband, zuletzt kritisierte Interims-Präsident Bartosch den Trainer, meinte: „Rangnick ist sehr schwierig. Ich versuche, den Kontakt aufrechtzuerhalten, aber er setzt immer eigene, unberechenbare Schritte.“ Auch Vize Johann Gartner kritisierte Rangnick.

Alaba nun: „Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass jemand aus dem Präsidium sich in der Öffentlichkeit in einer Art und Weise äußert, die wir als Spieler nicht akzeptieren können. Im Herbst wurde behauptet, wir Spieler hätten mit Streik gedroht, was nachweislich nicht gestimmt hat. Und jetzt wird unser Trainer kritisiert und die Spielweise der Nationalmannschaft analysiert, ohne Not und wenig konstruktiv.“
Der Star von Real Madrid weiter: „Jeder hat gesehen, dass wir in zwei Spielen gegen Serbien (1:1 und 0:2; d.Red.) klar besser waren. Wir haben leider unsere Chancen nicht genutzt. Aber wenn jetzt jemand sagt, wir sollen uns hinten reinstellen und unsere Spielweise verändern, dann hat er keine Ahnung von Fußball. Wir wollen und müssen genau so Fußball spielen, wie uns unser Teamchef lässt, damit wir erfolgreich sein können. Ich bin mir absolut sicher, dass wir gemeinsam auf dem richtigen Weg sind.“
