Anna Cruz, una de las mejores jugadoras en la historia del baloncesto español, ha anunciado su retirada cuando acabe la presente temporada. La escolta de 38 años y 1,74 metros, que milita en el Joventut de la Liga Femenina Endesa, se retirará después de labrar una completísima carrera jalonada de grandes éxitos y de canastas para el recuerdo.
“Como cada año por estas fechas, se acerca el momento de tomar decisiones. Durante los últimos cuatro años aproximadamente, se acercaba el mes de abril y siempre les decía a los míos que me retiraba, pero luego nunca pasaba. Bueno, pues esta vez parece que va en serio. Colgaré las botas cuando acabe esta temporada. Se me hace raro imaginarme mi vida sin un balón entre las manos, pero sé que es el momento y el sitio adecuado”, ha anunciado en sus redes sociales.
Cruz se estrenó en la élite con el UB Barça y pasó por el Arranz Jopisa Burgos, el Olesa y el Rivas Ecópolis antes de comenzar una dilatada aventura en el extranjero. Se fue a Rusia para jugar en el Nadezhda Oremburgo y el Dynamo Kursk y también militó en el Fenerbahce.
A su regreso a España en 2019, ha vestido otras cuatro camisetas: Kutxabank Araski, Casademont Zaragoza, Barcelona y el Joventut actual.
También probó suerte en la WNBA y tocó la gloria al ganar un anillo, teniendo protagonismo, con las Minnesota Lynx en 2015. Ella y Amaya Valdemoro son las únicas españoles que han conseguido el título en la competición estadounidense. Las temporadas sin descanso, jugando en un equipo europeo, con la selección y en la WNBA le pasaron factura en forma de lesiones.
La escolta fue una fija durante la mejor época de la selección femenina. Fue internacional en 158 ocasiones y ganó ocho medallas con la absoluta: dos oros en Eurobasket (2017 y 2019), plata en el Mundial de 2014 y en los Juegos de 2016 y bronces continentales en 2009 y 2015 y mundiales en 2010 y 2018.
Con la selección, Cruz anotó una canasta histórica, un tiro en el último segundo para derrotar a Turquía y meter a España en las semifinales de los Juegos de Río. Después, la selección se colgaría la plata tras perder en la final ante Estados Unidos. Pese a la derrota, fue una de las cumbres del baloncesto femenino español.
“Gracias al baloncesto he vivido muchas cosas que jamás pensé que me podrían pasar, pero lo que más me emociona es que mi familia también lo ha podido disfrutar conmigo. Me gustaría dar las gracias a todos los que en algún momento de este largo viaje me habéis mostrado vuestro cariño. Nada de esto hubiera sido lo mismo sin vosotros”, se despide la internacional, que apura sus últimos días en la cancha.
