Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is in question and, to be fair, it has been since its very creation, so an eventual stimulus check for Americans from the dividends of the budget-cutting campaign, which was implemented in order to slim down American bureaucracy, may never come.
Elon Musk, the head of DOGE, suffered a political setback last Tuesday in Wisconsin, where voters rejected his candidacy for the state Supreme Court, despite receiving more than $21 million in personal donations and appearing on the campaign trail over the weekend, so he hinted that he will finish his work in the near future.

President Donald Trump’s statements this week did little to help the perception of the situation surrounding Musk, DOGE and its eventual benefits to the population: “at some point Musk will go back to running his companies (…) and DOGE will be finished.”
The president was perhaps referring to Tesla and the situation facing the tycoon’s company, as there are delicate and well-known problems due to a 13% drop in sales during the first three months of the year.
When will DOGE end?
The White House has not revealed a clear timetable for the closure of DOGE, and the government cost-cutting organization was never conceived as a permanent entity in Washington. But it could be coming to an end sooner than expected. Originally, DOGE was scheduled to operate until July 4, 2026.
There are now signs that it is already coming to an end, as DOGE employees have been transferred to various federal agencies, which are supposed to lead the cost-cutting. Layoffs are taking place across the government to achieve some of the goals set by Musk and Trump.
Will there be a DOGE check?
Elon Musk made statements about a possible payment to Americans in the form of DOGE dividends: “It depends to some extent on Congress and perhaps the president to decide whether specific checks are issued, but it is a fact that reducing unnecessary spending will benefit the economy,” he said.
And he concluded: “As public spending becomes more efficient and is reduced, the inflationary tax is reduced (…) So, in one way or another, in reality, it will be better for everyone if resources are not wasted in the United States. We have made a lot of progress, but there is still a lot of work to be done“.
