Oakmont Country Club is one of golf's ultimate tests and the famed course just outside of Pittsburgh will serve as host of the 2025 U.S. Open beginning on Thursday. This will be the 10th time our national championship is contested at Oakmont, the most of any course in U.S. Open history. USGA setups are almost always the toughest of the four major championships on the golf schedule and the five-inch rough at Oakmont has been generating buzz for week. Bryson DeChambeau is the defending U.S. Open champion and finished 15th at Oakmont in 2016, his first major championship as a professional. He's +700 in the 2025 U.S. Open odds, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the +280 favorite after winning in three of his last four starts. However, as one of the least accessible Premier League stadiums for disabled supporters it is far from a perfect fit. The City Ground is in a beautiful spot at the heart of Nottingham, on the banks of the River Trent, with nearby Trent Bridge often hosting England’s cricket teams. There is little new and shiny about the place, hence why it managed just 12th in our most recent set of Premier […]

U.S. Open: The story behind the Oakmont Chainsaw Massacre

OAKMONT, Pa. — On the list of “sounds you don’t want to hear after midnight,” the angry whine of chainsaws is way high on the leaderboard. So in the early 1990s, when the wife of Oakmont’s club pro, up in the small hours to feed her infant child, heard the distinctive buzz of chainsaws radiating out from the course, she asked her husband what on earth could be happening. Bob Ford, Oakmont’s longtime professional, attempted to dodge his wife’s question, but finally came clean: the trees that had enshrouded Oakmont for decades were coming down.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Oakmont Chainsaw Massacre divided the posh private club, as well as the many pros who had battled its sloping fairways and rippling greens. There are high-profile, veteran golfers like Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Rickie Fowler still seeking their first major in years of attempts at the 2025 U.S. Open, but golf's next generation is emerging with potential young stars like Ludvig Aberg and Sahith Theegala as well.
