Es un día triste. De adioses. Primero fue Kevin de Bruyne el que anunció su salida del Manchester City y ahora es Mats Julian Hummels (Bergisch Gladbach, 16-12-1988) el que ha comunicado su retirada definitiva.
El internacional alemán, campeón del mundo en Brasil 2014, colgará las botas con 36 ‘primaveras’ después de 18 años en los que ha pasado por Bayern (2007-09 y 2016-19), Borussia Dortmund (2009-16 y 2019-24) y Roma (2024-25).

“Estoy luchando con mis emociones en este momento. Ahora llega el momento que ningún futbolista puede evitar. Después de más de 18 años y de tantas cosas que me ha dado el fútbol, este verano pongo fin a mi carrera.
Ahora viene la retirada, sí. Ésta es una de las escenas favoritas de mi carrera [dice mientras ve el pase frente al Málaga en Champions]. Cuando veo todo esto, sé lo mucho que ha significado para mí todo este viaje, todo este camino. Lo extraordinario que ha sido poder vivirlo.
Porque hace falta muchas cosas: tener los entrenadores adecuados en el momento adecuado, estar en forma en el momento adecuado, tener los compañeros de equipo adecuados en el momento adecuado. He visto a tantos tipos, tantos entrenadores, a los que debo mucho. Sin ellos, mi carrera nunca habría despegado ni habría llegado a este nivel.

Cuando el estadio tiembla después de un gol o te empuja hacia delante porque tu equipo lo necesita. Son los mejores momentos de todo. Cuando se crea este tipo de conexión es maravilloso jugar frente a ellos. Lo echaré de menos. Lo echaré de menos terriblemente”.
