El ‘wonderkid’ que rompe los récords de Lamine Yamal y sueña con “el Barcelona o el Real Madrid”

La carrera de Konstantinos Karetsas (Genk, Bélgica, 2007) apenas acumula una treintena de partidos en la élite… pero ya ha sido catalogado como una de las ‘estrellas del futuro’. Con 15 años jugaba en Segunda belga, con 16 debutó en Primera y con 17 ya marca goles con el Genk (líder en Bélgica) y con Grecia. En el último parón FIFA rompió el récord de Lamine Yamal en Nations League como el goleador más joven de la historia de la competición. Y en el pasado, hace dos años, dejó claro en una entrevista que le gustaría jugar “en el Barcelona o el Real Madrid”.

Pero todo empezó cerca del Cegeka Arena. La cantera del Genk es una de las mejores de Europa. Allí se formaron De Bruyne, Courtois, Yannick Carrasco, Edon Zhegrova o Leandro Trossard. Otros como Leon Bailey, Milinkovic-Savic, Ndidi o Koulibaly despuntaron al poco de aterrizar en la ciudad flamenca. Y si a la Genk Talent Academy le sumas Neerpede, la academia del Anderlecht, la fusión es perfecta. Por ambas pasó Konstantinos Karetsas.

‘Kos’ se formó en las mejores canteras posibles. O se está formando, mejor dicho. Apenas tiene 17 años y compagina el fútbol con sus clases de economía en el Atlas College de Genk. Y sin embargo, ya es una realidad. El menudo mediapunta (1,71 metros de altura) zurdo debutó el pasado curso, y este ya se ha afianzado en el líder (y más que posible campeón) de la liga belga: 31 partidos, tres goles y cuatro asistencias.

Karetsas es un mediapunta tremendamente habilidoso. Suele jugar por dentro pero también puede actuar desde la derecha. Un futbolista fantástico en lo que a técnica individual se refiere (el Genk trabaja muchísimo este apartado con entrenadores específicos). Sus números hablan por si solos: 4.07 regates exitosos por encuentro, el 17º mejor de Europa en este apartado.

El ‘robo del siglo’

La de Karetsas podría ser una ‘historia más’ de salto entre canteras… si no fuera por lo bueno que es, y por lo que apunta a ser. Dejó Genk en 2020 para irse al Anderlecht, pero en 2022 volvió a Limburgo tras una terrorífica gestión del club bruseliense. 

Pese al interés de clubes como el Manchester City, el Chelsea o el Dortmund… en Neerpede no vieron ‘las señales’. “El sentimiento de superioridad le costó caro al club”, analizaron Kjell Doms y Bob Faesen en ‘HLN.be’. Eran tiempos de cambio en Bruselas, y el Genk lo aprovechó.

En Genk, mientras, estaban atentos, como indicaba dicho medio: “Cuando Karetsas fue a jugar un partido en Genk con el Anderlecht Sub15, Dimitri de Condé está presente. El Director de Fútbol del Genk quedó boquiabierto al ver al zurdo en acción. En aquel momento, para el Genk fue doloroso que un jugador que había crecido a 200 metros del Cegeka Arena ahora jugara en el Anderlecht”.

Fue suficiente. Horas después, concretaron una cita con sus padres y dejaron clara la situación: quería que volviera. “Él siempre ha sido un hincha incondicional del Genk”, confesó su padre al tiempo que añadía que “era demasiado pronto para ir al extranjero”. Un ‘no’ al Manchester City, otro ‘no’ al Ajax… y de vuelta a Genk. “Quiero seguir desarrollándose aquí, siguiendo los pasos de ilustres predecesores como Kevin De Bruyne y Thibaut Courtois”, contó el propio ‘Kos’ cuando fue presentado oficialmente.

Una precocidad insólita

Muchos talentos han salido de Genk en los últimos años. Ventas millonarias. Sin embargo, ninguno con la precodidad de Karetsas. A su edad, 17 años y poco más de cuatro meses, Kevin De Bruyne, Leon Bailey, Leandro Trossard y Bilal El Khannouss aún no habían debutado al más alto nivel. Para ‘Kos’ ya son 35 partidos oficiales.

“Karetsas no es el más fuerte, pero aun así no es fácil marcarlo. Aprendió desde el principio a jugar lejos de los duelos”, analiza sobre él un entrenador de la cantera del Genk que cita ‘HLN.be’. “Kevin es el único que era mejor que ‘Kos’ a esta edad”, añaden también en el medio belga.

Karetsas debutó en Primera con 16 años, cinco meses y 15 días. Y, como dicen los tópicos, la edad a veces no es más que un número. Un futbolista capaz de mantener la calma en torno a las expectativas que se están generando en torno a su figura.

Antes, con 15 años, ya estaba jugando fútbol profesional en la Segunda División de Bélgica, con el Jong Genk. “Soy Konstantinos Karetsas. Tengo 15 años y me describiría como un jugador ofensivo con mucha creatividad y mucho trabajo”, decía con esa edad a ‘HLN.be’ en su primera entrevista como futbolista. 

Estrella… con 17 años

Apenas pasa los 66.000 seguidores en Instagram pero Karetsas ya es una estrella en Bélgica. Y en Grecia, el país del que son originarios sus padres. Lo ‘petó’ del todo con el golazo que anotó en Hampden Park, ante casi 50.000 espectadores, contra Escocia en la Nations League. Su primer tanto con la selección helena. 

Ese día, además, hizo historia: rompía el récord de Lamine Yamal (17 años y 253 días) y se convertía en el goleador más joven de la historia de la UEFA Nations League con 17 años y 124 días. Obviamente, también el anotador más precoz de la selección griega. 

Tras aquel ‘highlight’, el Genk recibió más de 30 peticiones de entrevistas para Karetsas. Algo que no le había ocurrido al equipo de Limburgo hasta la fecha. Lo protegen. No hablará. Están centrados en ganar la liga y quieren ‘cuidar’ a su joven perla. 

‘Kos’ ya tiene una canción. “¡Karetsas! ¡Karetsas! Fuego griego ardiendo en lo profundo de su alma. Sobre el terreno de juego tiene el control total”, canta, en inglés, el grupo ‘Robot Metal’. 

Grecia sí, Bélgica no

Pese a que jugó con las inferiores de Bélgica, Karetsas optó por jugar con Grecia.“La gente considera un gran honor que ‘Kos’ haya elegido Grecia, sobre todo porque es de cuarta generación. Mi esposa Irena y yo llevamos días recibiendo llamadas. Periódicos, emisoras de radio, programas de entrevistas… Todo parece girar en torno a ‘Kos’. Estamos increíblemente orgullosos de él, cuenta su padre, Vaios, en ‘HLN.be’.

“Es una elección del corazón, y no tiene nada que ver con el futuro de estas selecciones. Estoy agradecido de haber tomado esta decisión y tengo muchas ganas de centrarme al 100% en esta hermosa historia con Grecia. Aprecio mucho los esfuerzos realizados por la Federación Belga en las últimas semanas, y esta decisión no significa que me sienta menos belga”, declaraba el propio Karetsas tras anunciar lo que haría con su futuro.

Mi rutina antes de cada partido es buscar videos de ellos en YouTube. He aprendido mucho con eso. En los entrenamientos intento imitar sus acciones”, contaba con 15 años. En esa misma entrevista con ‘HLN.be’, por cierto, lanzaba una predicción de futuro….
