Fernando Romay recuerda con Pedrerol la espeluznante casualidad sobre la muerte de Fernando Martín

La muerte de Fernando Martín supuso el adiós de uno de los mayores mitos del deporte nacional. El jugador de baloncesto, primer español en jugar en la NBA y clave en el Real Madrid de los años 80, falleció el 3 de diciembre de 1989 en un trágico accidente de tráfico en la M-30.

35 años más tarde, Fernando Romay, compañero de Martín en el conjunto blanco y en la Selección Española, recordó ese momento en el pódcast de Josep Pedrerol, ‘El Cafelito’. Los jugadores del Real Madrid se enteraron de la noticia en el vestuario, antes del comienzo del encuentro ante el CAI Zaragoza: “No nos lo dijo nadie, fue una ruleta rusa. En el vestuario empezó el runrún: ‘Ha habido un accidente’, ‘Es alguien de baloncesto’, ‘El accidente es muy grave’. Según llegaban los jugadores de baloncesto, ibas descartando. Solo quedaban Quique Villalobos y Fernando Martín, y cuando vimos llegar a Quique… Solo quedaba Fernando y salimos todos escopeteados”.

Romay y el fatídico presagio que terminó en la tragedia de Fernando Martín

Lo más relevante de esta entrevista es que la casualidad quiso que Fernando Romay se viese implicado de forma indirecta en ese accidente por una decisión en las semanas previas. Todo comenzó cuando el pívot quiso comprarse un coche de segunda mano. Era un Lancia Thema 8.32. Antes de darle el talón, el jugador de baloncesto le dijo al director del concesionario si “me lo dejaba con el seguro que tenía” debido a un viaje que tenía planificado.

“Es un coche demasiado peligroso para que vayas con un seguro que no es el tuyo. No te lo podemos dejar”, dijo el director. En ese momento, según explica Romay, “un escalofrío” recorrió toda su espalda y apareció “esa vena gallega” de haberlas haylas. “No me lo quedé y dije que se lo vendieran a Fernando”.

“Fue el coche del accidente, desgraciadamente”, señaló el entrevistado, que confesó que “lo pasó mal” cuando murió uno de sus mejores amigos dentro de una pista de baloncesto.
