El ‘milagro’ de Míchel
Nacho, Míchel, Aubameyang, Casteels y compañía le han dado la vuelta al Derbi del Este. La temporada pasada, el técnico español logró el ascenso matemático a la Saudi Pro League a cuatro jornadas del final. Lejos de luchar por la permanencia en esta temporada, los de Khobar se hicieron con refuerzos de lujo el pasado verano. Apostando, a su vez, por talento joven y demostrando un gran nivel de juego, el ‘equipo milagro’ de la Liga saudí va cuarto con 51 puntos, empatado con el Al-Nassr de Cristiano Ronaldo. Pero la diferencia de goles mantiene tercero al equipo capitaneado por el luso.
Opciones de título… y el año pasado en Segunda
A nueve jornadas para el desenlace de la competición, los ‘Caballeros del Este’ tienen opciones incluso de pelear el título, ya que están a diez puntos del líder, el Al-Ittihad de Karim Benzema. Igualmente, tienen muchas papeletas para clasificar a la Champions de Asia. A la máxima competición de clubes del continente acuden de forma directa los dos primeros clasificados y el Campeón de la Copa del Rey (torneo en el que están en la final y enfrentarán al propio Al-Ittihad). Además, el tercer clasificado de la Saudi Pro League accede a una fase previa para clasificar a esta competición continental.

Rivalidad histórica, a 15 minutos
Su próximo rival y vecino(sus estadios están a 15 minutos en coche) no está cuajando la mejor de sus temporadas. Es el séptimo clasificado (35 puntos) y su exentrenador, Steven Gerrard, fue destituido en este mismo mercado de invierno. Además, viene de caer contra el decimocuarto clasificado, Al-Feiha (club a cinco puntos del descenso). En otras ocasiones, los de Damman habrían sido los absolutos favoritos para llevarse este derbi, ya que son un club histórico del fútbol saudí.

En la década de los 80 fue el gran equipo del país. Conquistó dos Ligas (1983 y 1987). Y fue el primer club de la Liga saudí en ganar un título internacional (Liga de campeones árabe, 1984). Además, es el único que ha logrado levantar la Liga invicto. Actualmente, el equipo no lleva su mejor racha, pero cuenta en la plantilla con nombres propios del fútbol europeo como Wijnaldum, el español Álvaro Medrán (ex Real Madrid), Vitinho y Demarai Gray.

Nacho y Medrán tendrán un duelo con esencia de ‘La Fábrica. Y es que el ’10’ de Al-Ettifaq y el ‘6’ de Al-Qadisiyah pasaron por la cantera blancay coincidieron en e primer equipo en la temporada 2015-16. De este modo, no serán los únicos españoles del choque. Iker Almena (ex Girona) y Cameron Puertas acompañarán al seis veces campeón de la Champions League en un derbi clave, en lo que podría ser un triunfo histórico para una temporada de ensueño.
