Ovechkin anotó dos goles, uno de ellos el ganador, en la victoria 5-3 de los Capitals sobre los Chicago Blackhawks en la pista de hielo del Capital One Arena de Washington, una auténtica fiesta con Gretzky presente en el pabellón. El primer gol de Ovechkin llegó tras pegar el disco en el poste y luego en la espalda de Knight, portero de los Blackhawks, antes de entrar en la portería. El segundo, tras un gran lanzamiento desde el lateral de la pista.
El moscovita tendrá su primera oportunidad para batir el récord este domingo en la pista de los New York Islanders. “Significa mucho. Es muy emotivo. Nunca imaginé que podría alcanzar ese récord“, dijo Ovechkin tras el partido.
“Estoy seguro de que todos disfrutaron este momento porque es algo especial, hacerlo en casa, frente a nuestros aficionados, la familia y los amigos. Y, obviamente, con Wayne aquí también. Es un gran honor, un momento histórico. Es increíble”, añadió un Ovechkin que suma ya 41 goles en 60 partidos esta temporada.
Gretzky mandó un saludo a Ovechkin desde la grada tras igualar el récord y después del partido lo quiso felicitar personalmente. “Alex ha sido fantástico para el hockey, para Washington, para su país. Es maravilloso. Estoy muy orgulloso de él”, afirmó el canadiense que alcanzó la cifra de los 894 goles en 1.487 partidos, mientras que Ovechkin ha llegado a ese registro en 1.486.
El ruso de 39 años aterrizó a la NHL de la mano de los Capitals en 2005, con los que ganó su única Stanley Cup en 2018. A seis partidos de terminar la temporada regular, los Capitals son líderes de la Conferencia Este y el segundo mejor equipo de la NHL solo por detrás de los Winnipeg Jets
