Panthers 2025 NFL Draft takeaways: Surprise pick of Tetairoa McMillan will define this class

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers draft started with something of a surprise for fans and media members who thought general manager Dan Morgan should use the No. 8 pick on a defensive player to add to the team’s last-in-the-league defense from 2024.Instead, Morgan took Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan before bringing in a pair of SEC edge rushers in the second and the third rounds – part of a plan that was hatched when Morgan and his scouts looked at what receivers would be available on the second day and didn’t like what they saw.Advertisement“We felt like in that second round we weren’t gonna get a real quality receiver. So in terms of philosophy, drafting T-Mac, we knew there was going to be a lot of edge rushers in this draft and we’d be able to capitalize there in […]

The Thunder just showed the Grizzlies how far from contention they really are, and how badly change is needed

They have a big three of Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane. They consistently develop inexpensive depth as well as almost any team in the NBA. Before this season, they'd established a pretty strong track record of outperforming expectations in the regular season. The Grizzlies look like a contender ... until a real contender shows up.From Feb. 8 on, the Grizzlies played 14 games against teams that finished in the top six in either conference. They went 1-13 in those games. Their point-differential in those games was a miserable minus-126. They tried to fix that in March by firing head coach Taylor Jenkins and assistant […]

Patriots 2025 NFL Draft takeaways: A clear plan, and lots of help for Drake Maye

For all of the concerns about the tough spot the New England Patriots were in, stuck with the No. 4 pick in a draft without a fourth blue-chip prospect, they sure yielded a heck of a haul. They spent their first four picks building around quarterback Drake Maye, first protecting his blind side with Will Campbell, then adding explosiveness on Day 2 to what was the league’s most boring offense over the last two years. On Day 3, they addressed their remaining needs with a couple of prospects graded much higher than where the Pats took them, some intriguing value for a draft class that felt close to a home run to kick off Mike Vrabel’s tenure.AdvertisementUnlike the drafts of previous years, this one seemed to have a sensible plan, and New England stuck to it. Bryce Harper talks Kyle Tucker, Wrigley Field vibes and what could have been with the Cubs

CHICAGO — During a recent Thanksgiving break, Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper bumped into Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer at a Nashville restaurant. Inevitably, they began talking shop.Advertisement“We were just messing around a little bit,” Harper recalled, “a what-could-have-been kind of thing.”History, in a sense, could be repeating itself with Kyle Tucker, another left-handed hitter who checks all the boxes in terms of what the Cubs are looking for in a franchise player. It’s only April, but the fan frenzy and media speculation surrounding Tucker’s future are already beginning to approach the kind of fever pitch that once followed Harper.Imagine if the Cubs had signed Harper as a free agent when they had the chance. Even with the annual selection meeting officially over, plenty of teams will be in bidding wars with undrafted players to get them on their roster. Some players would rather be undrafted in order to get more guaranteed money or work out contracts on their terms. The majority of undrafted free agents are just training camp bodies or roster fillers, but there are always a few on teams who end up making rosters and contributing for years to some. Some even end up as Pro Bowlers or make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. These undrafted players are worth paying attention to this time of year, especially with rookie minicamps coming up over the next few weeks. Vikings continue to value culture in draft, praise Donovan Jackson’s selflessness

<!--> The Minnesota Vikings had Donovan Jackson on their radar last year when he was considering entering the 2024 NFL Draft, before he opted to return to Ohio State for his senior season.Their interest in the 6-foot-4, 315-pound left guard was further piqued during Jackson's contribution to the Buckeyes on their way to the national championship, and not just for his ability and performance. An injury at left tackle created a need for Jackson to slide over, but head coach Ryan Day left the decision up to him. Playing an unnatural position on the fly, after all, posed a risk of devaluing his draft stock. But Jackson embraced the switch, valuing the greater good over his individual professional development with a team-first attitude that solidified Minnesota's faith in him as a first-round pick. The Vikings took Jackson with the 24th overall selection […]
