Ian Graham (46), ehemaliger „Daten-Papst“ beim FC Liverpool, hat verraten, dass Ex-Coach Jürgen Klopp (57) vor acht Jahren lieber den heutigen BVB-Star Julian Brandt (28/damals Bayer Leverkusen) anstelle von Mohamed Salah (32/damals AS Rom) verpflichten wollte.
In der BBC-Doku „How to Win the Champions League: Liverpool 2019“ sagt der Analyst: „Julian Brandt war Jürgens erste Wahl, weil er ein toller Spieler war. Jürgen kannte ihn aus der Bundesliga natürlich sehr gut. Wir waren uns alle einig, dass Brandt ein sehr guter junger Spieler war, aber nicht so herausragend wie Mo.“

Also versuchte man, Klopp mithilfe der gesammelten Daten vom ägyptischen Stürmer zu überzeugen. Graham erklärt: „Aus unserer Sicht war Mo der beste junge Flügelspieler Europas aufgrund der Datenanalyse. Die Roma stand unter Druck, weil sie finanziell in Schieflage war. Wir wussten also, dass er (Salah) zu einem guten Preis zu haben war.“
Und weiter: „Es spricht für Jürgen, dass er sich offen und ehrlich auf unsere Diskussion eingelassen und dann gesagt hat, ‘Okay, ich bin offen dafür, überzeugt zu werden. Zeigt mir, dass Mo besser ist’.“

Am Ende war Klopp überzeugt und Salah wurde 2017 für 42 Millionen Euro Ablöse verpflichtet. Der Rest ist bekannt. Bei den „Reds“ wurde der Stürmer zum Superstar, gewann u.a. 2019 mit dem Premier-League-Klub die Champions League und 2020 die englische Meisterschaft. Auch in laufenden Saison sieht es in der Liga gut aus für Liverpool. Bei zwölf Punkten Vorsprung auf den Tabellenzweiten Arsenal ist ihnen der Meistertitel kaum noch zu nehmen.
Ob es der letzte Titel für Salah im Liverpool-Trikot wäre, steht noch nicht fest. Sein Vertrag läuft am Saisonende aus. Lange standen die Zeichen auf Abschied, jedoch berichtet „Foot Mercato“ jetzt von einer Wende im Vertragspoker. Demnach soll Salah kurz davor sein, bei den „Reds“ bis 2027 zu verlängern. Angeblich wären nur noch Details zu klären.
Julian Brandt wechselte 2019 für 25 Millionen Euro von Leverkusen zum BVB, wurde mit den Schwarz-Gelben 2021 DFB-Pokalsieger. Sein Vertrag bei der Borussia läuft noch bis 2026.
