Gran jornada final en el LIV Golf Miami, en la que dos de los españoles, Sergio García y Jon Rahm, fueron protagonistas, aunque el triunfador en última instancia en el complicado campo de Trump National Doral fue Marc Leishman, que salía a tres golpes del líder al arrancar el día. El australiano ejecutó un putt decisivo en el 18 para par que le otorgó la gloria. Es su primera en el circuito de los 54 hoyos. Pese a no lograr la victoria, hay que valorar el buen momento tanto del castellonense –especialmente- como del vasco. Eso sí, el ‘León de Barrika’ firmó su peor puesto –noveno- en cinco torneos por culpa del cuádruple bogey del hoyo 17 (dos bolas al agua). Sí que podemos decir que, a las puertas del Masters, García, quien cumplirá su centenario en los ‘Majors’ en Augusta, está ofreciendo su mejor versión en años y será un excampeón a tener en cuenta en la pelea por la chaqueta verde. Terminó segundo y lo más destacado es que su juego está muy afilado. Se le ve con concentrado y con confianza.

El domingo estuvo muy agitado, con DeChambeau cediendo pronto el liderato, ‘Rahmbo’ alcanzando el coliderato después de seis hoyos y Sergio García muy firme. Leishman (-6) y Burmester (-5) llegaron con tres y dos golpes de ventaja respectivamente sobre los españoles al tramo decisivo. El pobre Phil Mickelson (54 años), que arrancó el día muy entonado y estaba en la pomada, también se bajó de la pelea por culpa de un doble bogey en el 7, tras pegar su bola en el palo de la bandera y salir disparada hacia el agua.
Sergio, sin apenas errores, materializó birdies al 8 y al 12 (pateó para eagle) para seguir presionado al líder. Por el contrario, Jon sufrió un frenazo con los bogesy del 9 y el 11, en los que no metió por muy poco sendos putts para par. Leishman jugó de tee a green perfectos el 8 y el 10, dos pares 5, y se escapó. En este tramo final, Rahm pegó un wedge en el 16 que le otorgó un birdie y le dio algo de vida, aunque todo terminó para él con los ocho golpes en el par 4 del 17. García, en el 15, festejó un putt de par de mucho mérito y el 16 lo jugó perfecto de tee a green, pero el putt se le escapó por nada.
Sergio pegó un segundo golpe de número uno mundial en el 17 (“¡Please, please!” gritaba a su bola para que siguiera avanzando hacia la bandera) y se dio una opción de biride que ejecutó y se puso a uno del líder. Leishman metió un putt muy difícil desde tres metros en su último hoyo, mientras que Sergio, también en el 18, se complicó y se acabó yendo al agua. Sin embargo, embocó un putt lejano para firmar el par y salir del Blue Monster con muy buenas sensaciones.
García está en modo Masters y en año Ryder. El ejemplo de su sólida mentalidad estas últimas semanas se resumió en su primer hoyo del domingo y el último. El de Borriol se fue al agua en ambos, pero logró un par majestuoso tras dos buenos putts. En la rueda de prensa del martes Mickelson alabó la actitud de Sergio en el Masters de 2017 y esas palabras a buen seguro han motivado estos días al español, que está que se sale.
