The arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) in the technological field has brought about a real revolution in recent years. In a context in which its evolution implies great changes in many sectors, aviation could be affected in the short term. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is studying the possibility of replacing one of the pilots with AI.
An issue that has raised concerns among the group due to the problems that could arise from this modification. Angel Gonzalez, a member of the technical department of the Spanish airline pilots’ union, took part in Antena 3’s ‘Espejo Publico’ on Monday, April 7.

The expert pointed out that “you don’t play” with the safety of passengers. The most positive thing, from his point of view, would be the integration of artificial intelligence to serve the two pilots in the cockpit. Eliminating one of them “for economic reasons” will “never be to the benefit of the user”.

“That mix is detrimental to safety. It is a global concern worldwide (…) It is not so much at the airline level as at the manufacturer level, what they want is to start by testing on long-haul flights. That in the middle of the ocean, when one goes to the rest areas, the other stays at the controls,” he stressed.
Gonzalez has made it clear that this would be “very dangerous” because in this situation “anything can happen and that redundancy of the pilot who returns and monitors the one who is flying is lost”. “The European Union, which must ensure safety in air transport, cannot be held hostage by Airbus. It is in our hands for governments and legislators to do something and for this attack on safety not to see the light of day,” he added.
