Lothar Matthäus (64) ist sich sicher, dass etwas Besonderes rund um Müller passieren wird. Bei „Sky90 – die Fußballdebatte“ sagte der Rekordnationalspieler: „Thomas Müller für die Mannschaft von Anfang an, mit Kapitänsbinde, ganz klar. Müller läuft an für die Mannschaft und schießt nach fünf Minuten das 1:0.“
Und weiter: „Solche Geschichten wird es wahrscheinlich geben, wenn er anfangen darf. Aber ich kann mir vorstellen, dass genau das passiert – irgendwas Spezielles um Thomas Müller, wenn er am Dienstag anfängt.“

Müllers Vertrag wird nach 25 Jahren im Verein am Saisonende nicht mehr verlängert, der Rekordmeister wird ihm kein neues Angebot unterbreiten. Das hatte der 35-Jährige am Samstag mit einem emotionalen Video und einem „Brief an die Fans des FC Bayern München“ bekanntgegeben.
Die aktuelle „Rolle“ als Nicht-mehr-immer-Spieler „hätte ich mir auch im nächsten Jahr gut vorstellen können“, schrieb Müller: „Der Verein hat sich jedoch bewusst dafür entschieden, mit mir keinen neuen Vertrag für die nächste Saison zu verhandeln. Auch wenn dies nicht meinen persönlichen Wünschen entsprach.“ Als Profi aber respektiere er diesen Schritt.
