Am Montagabend kürte sich Jeremy Monga (15) zum zweitjüngsten Spieler in der Premier-League-Geschichte. Der U16-Nationalspieler Englands kam bei der 0:3-Pleite von Leicester gegen Newcastle zu seinem Debüt.
Als Monga eingewechselt wurde, rieben sich viele Fans aber verwundert die Augen. Denn: Auf seinem Trikot fehlte der Sponsor. Anders als bei seinen Mitspielern war die Brust blank.
[–>Hintergrund: Auf den Leicester-Trikots prangt normalerweise der Krypto-Casino-Sponsor „BC Game“. Weil Monga aber erst 15 Jahre und 271 Tage alt ist, darf er keine Werbung für ein Glücksspielunternehmen machen. Der Flügelspieler lief daher in einem Trikot ohne Sponsorenaufdruck auf der Brust auf.
Der Engländer wurde im Jahr 2009 geboren, ist somit ganze 23 Jahre jünger als Klub-Legende Jamie Vardy (38). Leicester-Trainer Ruud van Nistelrooy (48) gilt als großer Fan von Monga und zog ihn nach seiner Ankunft direkt ins Training der Profis hoch.
Der Holländer: „Wenn Spieler gut genug sind, spielt das Alter für mich keine Rolle – sie können der Mannschaft helfen.“ Und: „Er (Monga; Anm. d. Red.) entwickelt sich richtig gut, und man sieht, wie viel Talent in ihm steckt. Ich habe aber auch erwähnt, dass die Situation als 15-Jähriger – mit Schule und der Möglichkeit, ihn regelmäßig bei der Mannschaft zu haben – nur eingeschränkt möglich ist.“

Übrigens: Monga ist nicht der jüngste Spieler, der jemals in der Premier League auflief. Diesen Rekord hält immer noch Ethan Nwaneri (heute 18). Der Engländer gab im September 2022 für den FC Arsenal im Alter von 15 Jahren, fünf Monaten und 28 Tagen sein Debüt.
Rosige Zukunft für Monga, düstere Lage für die „Foxes“. Während der 15-jährige Youngster Hoffnung macht, sieht es für Leicester bitter aus: Nach 31 Spieltagen steht das Team mit nur 17 Punkten auf dem vorletzten Platz. Der Rückstand auf den ersten Nicht-Abstiegsplatz beträgt bei noch sieben ausstehenden Partien bereits 15 Punkte.
