Meghan Markle‘s return to the podcasting world kicked off with a deeply personal revelation, as the Duchess of Sussex shared that she experienced postpartum preeclampsia, an often-overlooked and dangerous condition that affects new mothers.
In the premiere episode of her new series “Archetypes Presents: Confessions of a Female Founder,” Meghan spoke with Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd about the rarely discussed health issue that both women experienced after childbirth.
“We both had very similar experiences – though we didn’t know each other at the time – with postpartum, and we both had preeclampsia. Postpartum preeclampsia,” Meghan revealed.
“It’s so rare and so scary. And you’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly.”
Wolfe Herd, who stepped down as CEO of Bumble earlier this year, added: “I mean life or death, truly.”
The condition, characterized by high blood pressure and potential organ damage, usually occurs within a few days of childbirth and can be fatal if left untreated.
While Meghan did not specify whether the issue followed the birth of Archie or Lilibet, her decision to speak out marked a significant moment of transparency around maternal health.
Motherhood and work-life balance
Beyond her medical scare, Meghan used the episode to reflect on what it means to be both a mother and a businesswoman, particularly with her new lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard in its early stages. She described how the structure of her life allows her to stay connected to her children while building a company.
“I don’t leave the house to go to an office; my office is here,” she said. “She [Lilibet] only has a half day in preschool. If she wakes up and wants to find me, she knows where to find me… She’ll be sitting there on my lap during one of these meetings… I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Meghan also spoke about the emotional labor of raising children while trying to build something meaningful. “You’re building something while your child’s going through potty training… and both are just as important.”
Wolfe Herd noted that evolving technology has helped working mothers like them manage careers and parenting more fluidly. “Technology is a beautiful tool for parents because you can dial in and be present and do a great job on the call while you sit in the carpool line.”
Confessions of a Female Founder will feature eight episodes and is produced in partnership with Lemonada Media. It aims to spotlight stories of women balancing leadership, innovation, and family life in today’s demanding world.
Meghan‘s last podcast project, Archetypes, launched in 2022 through Spotify and was praised for its exploration of labels placed on women. Her latest venture signals a renewed focus on female empowerment and the intersection of personal and professional identity.
As Meghan put it, “They’re opening up, sharing their tips, tricks (and tumbles)… It has been absolutely eye-opening, inspiring… and fun!”
