Der DFB hat den Vertrag mit Sportdirektor Rudi Völler (64) vorzeitig um zwei Jahre bis Sommer 2028 verlängert. Der Verband konnte damit nach Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann (37) auch Völler über die WM im kommenden Jahr hinaus an sich binden.
Völler war im Februar 2023 zum DFB zurückgekehrt. Ursprünglich war eine Zusammenarbeit bis nach der Heim-EM 2024 geplant. Doch nach dem Turnier verlängerte Völler wie Bundestrainer Nagelsmann bis zur nächsten WM in den USA, Kanada und Mexiko.
Nun haben beide auch für die kommende EM in Großbritannien und Irland zugesagt.

Und weiter: „Aber wir sind noch nicht da, wo wir hinwollen. Wir haben die höchsten Ansprüche und Ziele und glauben, dass wir sie mit dieser begeisternden Mannschaft auch erreichen können.“
DFB-Präsident Bernd Neuendorf: „Rudi Völler war und ist ein ganz wichtiger Baustein, dass die Nationalmannschaft nach drei enttäuschenden Turnieren wieder zurück in die Erfolgsspur gefunden hat. Er ist für den Bundestrainer und seine Mannschaft sowie den gesamten DFB von zentraler Bedeutung. Deswegen war es mir ein persönliches Anliegen, nach der Verlängerung mit Julian auch Rudi von der weiteren Zusammenarbeit zu überzeugen. Gemeinsam haben sie eine neue Euphorie rund um die Nationalmannschaft entfacht. Für mich war deshalb klar: ‚Never change a winning team.’ Ich freue mich, dass es in dieser Kombination weitergeht.“

Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann: “Rudi ist eine enorm wichtige Bezugsperson für uns alle im Team der Nationalmannschaft. Als Ratgeber ist er mit seiner Erfahrung immer da, wenn wir ihn brauchen – wie eine Vaterfigur für das gesamte Team. Ich habe schon einmal betont, wie bedeutend er auch für mich persönlich und meine Entscheidung, damals über die Heim-EM hinaus zu verlängern, war. Deswegen bin ich froh, dass er diesmal mir gefolgt ist und uns bis zur EM 2028 weiter zur Seite steht. Seine Vertragsverlängerung ist für den deutschen Fußball, für uns als Team, aber auch für mich persönlich ein ganz entscheidender Schritt. Wir haben gemeinsam noch viel vor.”
Als Spieler absolvierte Völler von 1982 bis 1994 insgesamt 90 Länderspiele für Deutschland und wurde 1990 in Italien Weltmeister, 1986 in Mexiko Vizeweltmeister und 1992 in Schweden Vizeeuropameister. Von 2000 bis 2004 war er Teamchef der Nationalmannschaft und erreichte mit seiner Auswahl 2002 das WM-Finale.
Unter seiner Leitung als Sportdirektor erreichte Deutschland bei der Heim-EM das Viertelfinale, schied dort auf dramatische Weise gegen Spanien aus (1:2 nach Verlängerung).
