The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the clock – not just in terms of the upcoming NFL Draft, but when it comes to their future under center. With just two weeks until the first round, the team has yet to secure a starting quarterback, and rumors surrounding Aaron Rodgers have only muddied the waters.
While Rodgers remains noncommittal about his future, the Steelers appear stuck in limbo, and according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, that indecision is creating serious internal tension.

T.J. Watt’s patience is reportedly wearing thin
One of the most vocal signs of discontent has come from star pass rusher T.J. Watt, who’s entering the final year of his massive four-year, $112 million contract. According to Pelissero, Watt is not just thinking about money – he’s reportedly frustrated with the team’s lack of direction at quarterback.
He’s clearly due for a new deal,” Pelissero said during an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show. “But more than that, I’d say he’s tired of the uncertainty. He’s probably wondering the same thing fans are: what’s the plan here?
There have also been whispers about a possible Watt trade, something unthinkable just a year ago. But with no clear leader on the field and key veterans pushing for answers, nothing seems off the table.
Frustration reportedly spreads beyond Watt
Pelissero’s comments suggest that Watt isn’t alone in his concern. Veteran defensive lineman Cam Heyward recently made headlines for a blunt take on commitment, saying, “You want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t.” Although Heyward later attempted to walk back his remarks, Pelissero believes his sentiment is shared widely in the locker room.
There are definitely other voices in that building wondering, ‘What are we doing?'” he said. “Workouts are starting, the draft is around the corner, and there’s still no answer at the most important position.
A crossroads for the franchise
If Pittsburgh doesn’t resolve its quarterback situation soon – and publicly – the consequences could be costly. Whether it’s a $40 million contract extension for Watt or an exit for one of the franchise’s top talents, the ripple effect of Rodgers‘ indecision could define the Steelers‘ 2025 season before it even begins.
