Shedeur Sanders raises eyebrows with rumored draft preferences

As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, buzz around Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders continues to intensify, not just because of his on-field talent, but because of whispers about where he doesn’t want to go.

According to ESPN analyst Louis Riddick, who maintains close ties to the Sanders family, there’s growing concern that the projected first-round pick is quietly hoping to avoid being selected by either the Cleveland Browns or the New York Giants. Despite the public statements of openness from Shedeur and his father, Coach Deion Sanders, Riddick revealed on First Take that “there are other teams they want him to go to,” and that the Sanders camp would prefer he not be picked in the top three.

Shedeur Sanders & Travis Hunter reunite before Pro Day as they’re ready to be rivals in the NFL

Trouble at the top of the draft board

The Browns and Giants currently hold the No. 2 and No. 3 overall picks, respectively. Both franchises are in need of a franchise quarterback, and Sanders-coming off an impressive season with Colorado-seems like a natural fit on paper.

However, the Browns have been mired in controversy and uncertainty. Deshaun Watson’s injury has put the team’s future in question, Myles Garrett’s contract drama raised eyebrows, and Nick Chubb remains without a team. All of this turmoil may be causing hesitation from the Sanders side.

Is Shedeur worth a top-three pick?

Analysts remain divided on whether Sanders is a sure-fire top-three pick. While he boasts impressive stats and leadership, other elite prospects like Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter are also in the mix.

If teams sense reluctance from Sanders‘ camp, it could cause a slide on draft night-possibly to a team like the New Orleans Saints or even the Pittsburgh Steelers. Whether that’s a strategic move or just pre-draft noise remains to be seen.

The PR gamble

If the rumors are true, the Sanders camp is taking a calculated risk. While no team wants a player who doesn’t want to be there, NFL front offices typically focus on talent and fit over media whispers. The Browns might still draft Sanders if they believe he’s the right man for the job.

One thing’s certain: wherever Shedeur ends up, all eyes will be watching how his next chapter begins
