É oficial: Clube da segunda divisão da Inglaterra anuncia Modric como novo sócio

Aos 39 anos, o croata Luka Modric foi anunciado como novo sócio do Swansea. O jornalista italiano Fabrizio Romano, especialista em movimentações financeiras no futebol, havia antecipado que o meia adquirira participação minoritária do clube galês que disputa a segunda divisão da Inglaterra. O negócio foi confirmado horas depois.

Em postagem nas redes sociais, o Swansea deu as boas-vindas ao investidor. “Estou animado em fazer parte da jornada”, disse o atleta, num vídeo anexado ao post. O CEO do clube, Tom Gorringe, destacou em comunicado que o croata será um modelo para os jogadores, da base ao elenco principal.

“Estou convencido de que posso trazer minha experiência para o clube. Meu objetivo é apoiar positivamente o crescimento do clube e contribuir para a construção de um futuro promissor”, explicou Modric, em comunicado.

O time pertence a um consórcio americano. Os valores da venda do Swansea e do valor investido por Modric não foram revelados. Fabrizio Romano afirmou que a decisão do croata faz parte de seu “projeto pessoal para o futuro”, e não será prejudicial para seu desempenho dentro de campo. Atualmente, o vencedor da Bola de Ouro de 2018 tem contrato com o Real Madrid até o final de junho deste ano, mas quer continuar jogando até a próxima Copa do Mundo, que começa em julho de 2026.

Fabrizio Romano afirmou que “Modric continua totalmente focado no Real Madrid, é um jogador essencial para Ancelotti por sua qualidade, liderança e estatísticas, que melhoraram desde a última temporada”. A ideia, então, é que o jogador continue no clube por mais uma temporada, e o treinador Carlo Ancelotti já demonstrou publicamente ser favorável à renovação do contrato.

Fundado em 1912 na cidade homônima ao time — a segunda maior metrópole do país de Gales —, o Swansea atualmente disputa a Championship, segunda divisão da Inglaterra. O time já viveu momentos de maior destaque entre as equipes inglesas. De 2011/12 a 2017/18, disputou a Premier League e teve bom desempenho. Nos outros torneios, venceu a Copa da Liga em 2013 e chegou às oitavas de final da Liga Europa em 2014.

Na 12ª colocação na Championship deste ano, o Swansea já não tem mais chances de conquistar o acesso à primeira divisão nas rodadas finais do torneio. Desde o rebaixamento em 2018, o clube galês tem se mantido na zona intermediária da tabela.

A exceção foi na temporada de 2020/21, quando teve chances de conquistar o acesso à Premier League com a quarta colocação ao final da segunda divisão — mas perdeu a vaga nos playoffs para o terceiro colocado Brentford, que subiu para a elite inglesa.

Inglaterra, celeiro de investimentos

Até poucos anos atrás, o título de “cartola” de um time era reservado a empresários bilionários, como magnatas ligados aos setores de óleo e gás e do mercado financeiro. Mas vários jogadores e artistas passaram a buscar um naco deste mercado por várias razões.

De acordo com o jornal Esquire, uma das principais delas é preservar e impulsionar o rendimento das fortunas, a partir da valorização da imagem e do desempenho esportivo. No entanto, a tendência de investimento pode estar ligada também ao que o veículo chamou de “tendência Ted Lasso”, numa referência à série da Apple em que um treinador americano, interpretado por Jason Sudeikis, é contratado para assumir o fracassado AFC Richmond, mesmo sem ter qualquer experiência na condução do esporte, e prospera em meio a lições de vida.

O clube galês Wrexham, recentemente promovido à terceira divisão, é propriedade dos colegas atores Ryan Reynolds e Rob McElhenney, que deram início a uma tendência recente de celebridades investindo em times britânicos. Ambos se tornaram exemplo de como administrar um clube que estava fora do radar da mídia e atrair simpatia geral pela franquia.

Em maio do ano passado, Will Ferrell se juntou ao ator Russell Crowe, ao nadador olímpico Michael Phelps e aos jogadores de golfe Jordan Spieth e Justin Thomas, que já eram investidores no Leeds. Ator do Pantera Negra, Michael B Jordan foi anunciado como coproprietário do Bournemouth, time da Premier League, em 2022, enquanto o ex-quarterback da NFL Tom Brady é um investidor do Birmingham, que foi rebaixado para a terceira divisão no ano passado.

Outro astro de outro esporte, LeBron James comprou em 2011 uma participação de 2% no Liverpool (o naco do atleta no time já vale 12 vezes mais do que ele pagou, segundo a Esquire).
