With the arrival of new features and technological improvements, WhatsApp is preparing to make an important change in April 2025: it will stop supporting several cell phone models that no longer meet the minimum operating system requirements. The decision responds to the need to ensure better performance, more security and a user experience in line with the latest updates to the app.
This measure will mainly impact devices with older operating systems that cannot run WhatsApp’s new tools, such as improvements in video calls, new chat organization features, document scanner and integration with artificial intelligence. Users who still use these devices could be left without access to the app or face major malfunctions.

Which phones will be without WhatsApp?
In the list of devices that will lose compatibility are both Android and iPhone models. In the case of Apple, devices that do not have iOS 15.1 or a later version will no longer be able to use the app. This includes the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, released between 2013 and 2014.
On the Android side, all phones running versions older than Android 5.0 will also be affected. Among the affected brands are Samsung (Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note II, S4 Mini), Motorola (Moto G first generation, Moto E), LG (Optimus G, G2 Mini, Nexus 4), HTC (One X, Desire 500) and Sony (Xperia Z, Xperia T, among others).
How do you know if your phone is still compatible?
Before worrying about a possible service interruption, you can easily check if your phone is still eligible to use WhatsApp. On Android devices, simply go to Settings, look for the About phone or System section, and check the Android version number that appears.
On iPhone, the procedure is just as quick: open Settings, go to General and select About. There you will see which version of iOS is installed. If you do not have iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0 or later, your device is at risk of being unsupported by WhatsApp from April.Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, continues to develop new tools that demand greater technical capacity from devices.
