The 2024-25 New York Knicks are victims of expectations. They’re victims of circumstance.
Another 50-win season wasn’t supposed to be something to sneeze at, especially when you consider the story behind it. For 20 years, the Knicks were laughed at. Dismissed. Unserious.

But five years ago, when Leon Rose and Tom Thibodeau took over, the franchise once again became relevant for the team name, and not just the city in which they play. Four winning seasons. Two trips to the second round of the playoffs. A star player in Jalen Brunson becoming someone the star of stars fawned over.
Knicks basketball was back.
But things change when the honeymoon is over.
Last offseason, the Knicks traded seven first-round picks to add Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, leaving many to believe the franchise was ready for the next step. Expectations — and pessimism — soon followed.
This team was supposed to be among’s the league’s elite. Instead, the Knicks went winless against the top-three teams. They were 9-20 against the league’s top-10 defenses.
Now, the Knicks go into the playoffs facing a feisty, hungry Pistons team. A team similar to what the Knicks used to be.
The Knicks are a good basketball team. But how good?
They have the playoffs to answer that. They have the playoffs to change the narrative. They have the playoffs to fill some of that emptiness.
This is what the Knicks and their fans have been waiting for. The playoffs.
It’s time to see what’s real and what’s not.
