The Kansas City Chiefs started their revenge tour with some quick-hitting moves. Following a crushing loss in Super Bowl LIX, the Chiefs front office identified specific needs and got to work in free agency and through the trade market. Still, they know they must do more. Even GM Brett Veach himself mentioned they have holes to fill at several positions with the 2025 NFL Draft one week away.
While the front office works, Patrick Mahomes is doing the same, but on the gridiron. Mahomes shared pictures of himself working out with a few Chiefs position players on Thursday. Most notably, newly signed running back Elijah Mitchell was among the group. Mahomes even posted a picture of just the two and tagged him, so they seem to have quickly gained chemistry.

Chiefs don’t seem thrilled with running back room from 2024
Although Kareem Hunt was brought back for another season, the Chiefs still brought in Mitchell to give them another type of runner out of the backfield. Despite Isiah Pacheco playing extremely well as a rookie, he was inefficient in 2024, particularly after coming back from a major injury.
On Thursday, Veach made it a point to mention how incredibly deep the running back class in the 2025 NFL Draft is, and he also mentioned wanting to bring in a running back “that has explosive ability on both ends”, meaning at his position and in the return game. He flat-out said he thinks the Chiefs will draft a running back.
It’s not a great vote of confidence for either Pacheco or Hunt that the GM is openly saying that they plan to add competition for them, in addition to Mitchell who is already on the roster. Mahomes needs more out of his running backs in order to maximize the ceiling of the offense.
