Der Würzburger Hannes Steinbach (18) bekommt auf seinem Weg in die NBA prominente Hilfe. Im Sommer wechselt das 2,05 Meter große Ausnahmetalent an die Universität Washington und spielt in der College-Liga NCAA. Sein Ansprechpartner dort ist Ex-NBA-Profi Detlef Schrempf (62), der auf dieselbe Uni ging. Steinbach: „Mir wurde gesagt, dass er häufiger am College ist und mir gern mit Rat und Tat zur Seite steht.“
Emotionen pur!: NBA-Megastar bricht in Tränen aus
Zu Beginn war NBA-Legende Dirk Nowitzki (46) eine enge Bezugsperson. Gelegentlich warf er mit ihm früher auf dem Pferdehof seines Vaters Bälle auf den Korb. Steinbachs Papa Burkhard (54), genannt der „Koloss von Moos“, spielte zusammen mit Nowitzki für Würzburg in der BBL, schlug ihm einmal aus Versehen einen Zahn aus. Dennoch sind beide bis heute befreundet und stehen in Kontakt.
In den vergangenen Jahren war Hannes Steinbach auch bei den Pfingst-Camps des Nowitzki-Mentors Holger Geschwinder (79) dabei. Außer Werfen und Lagerfeuerabenden bei Jazzmusik stand Rudern auf dem Starnberger See auf dem Programm. Lohn des Krafttrainings: Im vergangenen Jahr vergrößerte Steinbach seine Muskelmasse und nahm von 97 auf 110 Kilo zu.
Bereits in seiner ersten BBL-Saison sorgt der U18-Europameister für Furore. Pro Spiel kommt er in 18 Minuten auf einen Schnitt von 7,1 Punkten, 5,5 Rebounds und 0,7 Blocks. Sein Spiel ist vielseitig, was ihn auch für die NBA interessant macht. Acht NBA-Scouts kamen diese Saison nach Würzburg, um Steinbach zu beobachten – von Atlanta, Chicago, LA Lakers, LA Clippers, Memphis, Denver, Portland und Dallas.
[–>Doch Steinbach, der gerade sein Fachabi macht, entschied sich für den Weg aufs College. „Das ist eine gute Option für mich, um mich an die Lebensweise und den Spielstil in Amerika zu gewöhnen“, sagt er. „Die Uni Washington passt gut zu mir, weil der Trainer Danny Sprinkle dafür bekannt ist, viel über die Forwards zu spielen. Das kommt mir entgegen. Und die Bühne, auf der man da spielt, ist näher an der NBA, als wenn man in Europa spielt.“
Sich schon in diesem Jahr für den NBA-Draft anzumelden, erschien Steinbach zu früh. Das ist nun für die Zeit nach dem College in drei Jahren geplant.
Vorher jedoch wünscht sich Steinbach einen schönen Abschied aus Würzburg: „Wir wollen eine ähnliche Euphorie entfachen wie im Vorjahr.“ Da erreichte Würzburg das Halbfinale.
