The Las Vegas Raiders may be leaning on legacy, and talent, in the 2025 NFL Draft. According to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler,Tom Brady’s alma mater could influence the team’s first-round decision: selecting Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham at No. 6 overall.
Both Brady and newly hired general manager John Spytek are Michigan alumni, and that connection could tip the scales in favor of Graham, though his on-field dominance speaks for itself. Brugler highlights Graham’s relentless ability to penetrate offensive lines and disrupt plays. While he lacks the elite length of some top prospects, his skill set and work ethic make him a nightmare for opposing offenses.
What a cannon! Tom Brady nearly causes a tragedy at a mall with hundreds in attendance
Graham finished his 2024 season with 46 total tackles, 24 solo, and 3.5 sacks. His efforts earned him Unanimous All-American honors and a first-team All-Big Ten selection, along with a Rose Bowl MVP title. His motor, production, and discipline make him one of the most polished interior defenders in this year’s class.
Raiders in need of defensive stability
Las Vegas ranked near the bottom of the league last season, allowing 25.5 points per game. Star pass rusher Maxx Crosby shouldered much of the load, and the addition of Graham could finally bring balance to the defensive line. Graham’s physicality and football IQ would instantly elevate the unit, and bring some long-term consistency to the middle of the defense.
With Brady now calling the shots as a minority owner, a Michigan product like Graham could be more than just a fit, it might be a statement.
Offensive options still in play
Despite Graham’s upside, the Raiders have needs across the board. Brugler’s mock notes that players like running back Ashton Jeanty or wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan could also be tempting picks. Supporting new quarterback Geno Smith and tight end Brock Bowers with more offensive firepower remains an option.
Still, if Brady and Spytek prioritize Michigan roots and defensive grit, Mason Graham could become the foundation of a Raiders defense with playoff ambitions.
